"Out of curiosity I dug into how NFT's actually reference the media you're "buying" and my eyebrows are now orbiting the moon"
This thread is well worth the read...
This thread in a nutshell exposes how NFTs are just JSON files on a host server and once that server is moved or that hosting service or CDN goes belly up, you no longer have access to the NFT.
In 5-10 years most of these NFTs won't even be accessible, And because these are on the blockchain, as of now this cannot be changed for all of these NFTs purchased thus far. There is no way to remedy it.
And it's already happening now,
This craze has been enormous.
But it hasn't been well thought out.
That's where THETA comes in.
THETA can be the decentralized CDN that provides "permanent" hosting for files regardless of whether or not a server goes down. THETA actually provides a big solution to a big new problem. We don't know whether or not NFTs are here for the long haul. But for the near term if anyone buys them and wants to have access to them, THETA should assist with that.
