Where I am from, there is a popular saying that goes: In all thy gettings, get money. Money is easily the most important thing in the world today. The poor perish for lack of it while the rich sell their souls and collect bodies for it. Money is a universal language that unites the human race. There is no enmity with money as it can change hands from friends to foes and what not.
To be considered a human being worthy of respect, you have to have money. To be regarded by your own family, you have to have money. Money speaks for you, announces your presence before you even arrive. People will fall at your feet and sing your praises as long as you have money. Hence, it is no surprise the length some are willing to go to make said money.
One of the many advantages of having money is the autonomy it gives. Money means control. Having it means you get to make independent decisions that affect your life as you see fit. Many who find themselves in abusive and dehumanizing situations find it difficult to leave because they lack resources to cater for themselves.
Having money means you can say No to things, or Yes to them because you actually want to. Not because you don't have a choice. When you take away financial dependence, we get to see what would be more meaningful and genuine connections, not a performative one you have to put up with them because of the financial benefits that is available to you.
One of the many reasons I work hard to have my own money is my need for personal autonomy, who does not like to be controlled or told what to do. I remember when I wanted something different from what my parents wanted for me at the time, the only reason I went with their idea was because I didn't want to know what it feels like for them to withdraw their financial care. They didn't threaten me with that but I had seen it happen to my friends.
Money is not the solution for every problem but it sure give you options, and who wouldn't want that.
