From what I remember as a kid, they only stink when smashed. I'm not sure if that was true only in my area or what. But if that is the case then they probably don't know because they're dead by the time they smell themselves.

I think that he was not teased as a child as a stinker only if everyone around him was a stink bug :) !VSC
