From what I read it's using USDC but doesn't need to exactly tap into the Ethereum blockchain every time. There are better ways of doing it and Polkadot is on the right track of allowing it to process everything and then touch the Ethereum blockchain once for thousands of transactions. The biggest issue is so many of these Dapps where lazy developed and simply just hammer the blockchain with transaction after transaction for no reason.
