One of the issues with short selling is that you also get screwed if you missed the mark and now you have to buy back shares at a higher price to give them to the person from whom you borrowed in the first place. In most cases, playing the market has become gambling more than investing, so people have to be careful. Value investing is a great way to invest...buying something that you believe has value. Also, there are inverted markets. For instance, I have TTT which is an inversion of the 20 year bond. As interest rates go up, my value goes up. As interest rates go down, my value goes down. It is gambling in nature compared to buying something like Apple that pays a dividend and has an expected value behind owning a piece of the business. It's a fine line...but it's there. Caution is key.
