It's been a bit of a crazy week for us here on the blockchain(s). With the US debt ceiling crisis dragging on and on, there has been a lot of ups and downs with the market. Today, we finally may have gotten some relief from that, only to be hit with a whammy from left field.
It is time again for another Finance Friday/Friday Finance. This is a series I started where I talk about random bits of financial stuff that I have seen, gathered, or experienced during the week. I hope as a reader you find it informational, entertaining, or both. I also hope it can generate some good discussion and edify the Leo community.
I woke up this morning to see that there was an announcement in the Leo Finance Discord. Something from @anomadsoul about an airdrop. I did my due diligence and double checked to make sure it was really his account. Sure enough, it was the same @anomadsoul account I have been following and talking to for years now.
I clicked the link to the airdrop (that was the announcement by the way), and looked at the page, but realized I needed to get ready for work, so I shut it down and forgot about it. After my workout and shower I got back on my phone only to see that I had alerts in other communities.
Good old @trumpman had pointed out that anomad's account was potentially hacked and there was something fishy going on in the Leo Discord.
Accounts are getting blocked for speaking out. It's definitely a scam. I jumped over to the Leo Telegram and that seems to be intact for now.
Unfortunately, I have a feeling a lot of accounts are going to get rekt today.
What I love though is the fact that the Hive community as a whole is looking out for each other. People are writing posts like this, other community servers are posting announcements and warnings in their servers. I know a lot of people aren't going to see those, but many are and it will make the difference for them.
I haven't been kicked out of the Discord yet, so I have been keeping an eye out for people I know and letting them know via DM that it is a scam.
I don't know much about this sort of thing, but to me this looks like it was a pretty well planned hack. To have the site up and running and ready to go feels like it might have taken a bit of time. Either that or they had AI do it.
I was trying to look for more finance stuff to write about today, but honestly, this is going to be the big news of the day if not the week.
Leo is going to have a difficult road ahead of them to regain credibility. I hope they are transparent about how this hack could have taken place. No 2FA? Simple passwords? This isn't good optics for sure.
My best advice.... If you are still in the Leo Discord, keep an eye out for friends or acquaintances and let them know what it up.
As a community we might be able to help mitigate the risk here. Like I said though, there are still a lot of people who are going to get rekt today. I already saw a post in Telegram saying "all my BTCT is gone".

Add me to that list. I was going into discord to get an update on a support ticket in which i was waiting on a refund for swap.hive and then I saw an airdrop announcement and connected my wallet and had bnb funds drained.
It was a mad 30minutes trying to scrounge around hive to send to binance to then send to wallet so I could have gas fees to revoke all token approvals and connected sites from the wallet.
ffs!!!! Never thought I'd get caught out...and I still don't have any funds so im worse off!

It looks like the team got control of the channel again, but this was a serious breach and people lost money.
Its awful to hear that people lost money - absolutely terrible.

Damn that's terrible. I left the leo discord a week ago so guess I got lucky. Sounds like a close call for you, yikes. If that was the case then I think you're right, a lot of people could have lost some funds. Dang :(
It sounds like it may have not been as bad as it could have, but I still think a lot of smaller accounts may have been drained.
Always makes one angry when greedy plebs put their hand in the cookie jar of people trying to make ends meet using variety of ways online.

I am very suspicious of airdrops from some time ago, really hope those who went in on blind faith have not lost too much.

Hopefully people dont lose funds from this hack. It is awful that there are so many scammers about.
Yeah, this is why we need regulation I guess... :P It sucks though. Especially when it happens to some of our own.
I saw that something like over 50% of internet traffic is bots, we will need to be super careful with our data in future I guess.

Luckily I saw Eric's Thread warning that someone had hacked his account. But I've had a really busy past few days so I didn't even look in Discord. Double lucky! I didn't load up discord till after they regained control of the channel.
A good reminded to always use 2FA when available, make sure you are using a strong password, and do security checks on your accounts often. I'm sure you do that. I do. I'm sure Eric will after this event. I always hope others will figure it out as well.
Yeah, I enabled 2FA on my discord quite some time ago.
I wonder if this compromise is the one being talked about here.

That was all a bit crazy yesterday, I see they appear to have control back in place now which is good, and have implemented a new access verification protocol. Its a reminder to us all about security.
