Hive is Community

Through a series of posts and conversations lately, I have been reminded of just how important community is. Specifically community here on Hive.

In the past, it was quite typical for users to be drawn to the money making aspect of Hive via blogging or vlogging. In more recent years we have seen the addition of gaming as well, whether for profit or purely enjoyment.

Those who have weathered the storm (aka crypto winter of 2018 to 2020) will most likely tell you that the real crux of Hive is the community aspect. It may have taken them a while to see that (I know it did for me), but eventually, you come to realize the community is probably the most valuable aspect of Hive.

The interesting thing is, community is actually a multi-faceted term on Hive.

While you have the overall community that I just talked about, we now also have the individual content communities on Hive. For those of us who have been on the platform for a while, we can attest to the fact of how game changing those communities have been.

To my detriment, I post about a lot of different things. This makes it hard for me to find any "one" community to call home. I will post maybe a couple of times a week in the Leo community, then I might bounce over to one of the music communities... you get the idea.

While I likely have a small amount of name recognition in those communities, I would be hesitant to call myself a "staple" member of any of them.

By contrast, those who dedicate themselves to a single community can achieve significant wealth and success if they put forth the effort.

Here is an example of what I mean:

The other day I came across a name on Hive that I haven't seen in quite a while. Forgive me, I don't remember the exact person, but that isn't really the important part. What matters is the fact that myself and that person started on Hive around the same time back in late 2017.

We were in a couple of the same loose communities that were around back then. Most of them were based in Discord and geared towards growing your account. Over time those defacto groups were dissolved or we slowly moved away from them.

Either way, when that happened, we were still basically on the same level, struggling to get noticed and scraping in whatever rewards we could.

The other day when I came across them again, I jumped over to their blog page and found that they had made a nice home in one of the actual communities on Hive and they were pulling in some pretty hefty rewards from their content.

One would argue that what I pull in from my rewards are nothing to scoff at, and while that is true, this person was pulling in a good two to three times more than me. On every single post.

Keep in mind, the quality of the content has to be there for this to be duplicated. We are thankfully far removed from the bid bots of old and pictures of dogs with a single sentence getting hundreds of dollars in upvotes.

Please also keep in mind that the rewards aren't everything. They are fleeting and as many would tell you, not officially yours until that seven day stretch has come to fruition.

You can see though how big of a difference it can make to find a community to call home and share your content there. I honestly think that new users to Hive have it easier than we did back in the day. They are able to focus their efforts and talents. Us old timers were basically throwing a dart a map and hoping it hit something or even sticks many times.

The countless community incubation programs that are out there now are just the icing on the cake. It's almost sickening how easy it can be to grow your account these days. Trust me, I mean sickening in the most positive way.

I hope this post gives you an idea of just how powerful community (on all its levels) is on Hive.

Sort:

I use to branch off into many different communities but recently, I have just been keeping track of a few. There is only so much time left in the day and work has also started to pick up.

Yeah, I hear you there!

Without a community you won't have your content curated. Most of my curators are LeoFinance related. The person you were referring to has for sure created a great community around him/her that's supporting his/her content. In some cases it's just circle jerking...

I agree. We are getting to the point where "community hopping" is not going to be a fruitful as being dedicated.

The reason is while the communities might appreciate it, to grow they need serious, committed people. This is where the bigger accounts are going to reward.

That's where I would argue that if you are doing things right circle jerking happens organically and it isn't necessarily a bad thing. It is human nature to want to support those whom you have formed a bond with. I'd be much more concerned if the opposite were true. I don't think anyone wants a platform of sociopaths.

Hi, this is actually a very lovely one. I also can call myself "Unstable" when it comes to selection of what community I can fit in. Since I'm not so much of a one community guy, I choose to post randomly and expect to have the hit whenever it comes.

Just a simple question? How did you conclude on what community you can stick with?

What if you have varieties of contents that can fit into two or more communities. Is it possible to explore all?

I'm new here and I love this post. I hope to get a solution from you🥰

How did you conclude on what community you can stick with?

Where is your knowledge and what interests you?

That is what can determine where you gravitate towards.

Thanks for the tip🥰

You can post in one community and use tags to get your stuff in other ones. You just have to be careful to make sure you are using relevant tags for their appropriate communities. For example, sometimes we see sports stuff with a LEO tag. Unless you are talking about financial stuff in sports, it doesn't really fit. Eventually you will likely find some like minded people in your various communities that will start supporting you. I think ultimately you just need to do what you feel is best. I wouldn't paint myself into a single community if my content covers a broad spectrum.

This is comprehensive Thanks. I think I can do better with this✅

I have said all along that people need to find their communities (most of us could fit in more than one). That makes Hive fun and potentially more lucrative. There is an element of luck as gaining support from a big account can give you a real boost even if they don't interact much. I do well thanks to getting to know lots of people. I mix it up with content too, but that is what I enjoy and I won't restrict myself. It is not compulsory to engage with everything I post and some of it is pretty specialist. I post in actual Hive communities to reach that audience who don't need to follow me directly. That is part of what communities offer.

Great points. I don't see myself sticking to any one community either. I just have too much going on in my life that I enjoy sharing. I'm actually glad you commented. I know you like podcasts and there is one called archive 81 that they just based a Netflix series on. The show was fantastic but I haven't listened to the podcast yet. You might want to give it a try.

There are so many podcasts now and some are really big. I've been listening to them for many years now. I'll look at that show. Podcasts can be about anything as they are just another form of content. I really need to do more of my own one.

I agree. The whole picture and feel is a bit different since I started in early 2018. I still see some crap getting votes from appreciator and that ticks me off a bit. BUT I redirect that frustration and just ignore it. When the votes stop, they'll vanish into thin air along with their single photos and 25 word posts.

As for the other end of things, the communities.. It took a while to gain traction, but I LOVE what it has grown into. I feel like I am home.

I feel like I am home.

That is awesome to hear! I know what you mean about appreciator, but then again sometimes I get those votes from them and it feels pretty darn good! :)

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

It does. I don't get those votes often, from any of the wales. I stopped caring a while ago. Not worth the thought really. I just feel like that sort of bot voting cheapens our genuine efforts. I DO appreciate the curation efforts of those like Curangel, Qurator, OCDB etc. I like the fact that someone had to read the content and recommend it for curation, rather than an auto upvote due to geographic location or timing the post release.

It's nice to feel good now and again.

I guess I never really thought of it like that. I'd probably be happy and never give it a second thought if one of those whales started autovoting me. I honestly feel like my content deserves it and after four years of scraping by I have earned it. You as well. I understand what you are saying though about people actually reading your posts.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

With how active you are.. No one deserves a nice healthy auto vote more than you! 😊

Thanks, I appreciate that.

I find that the opposite approach is what works for me. My preference is not to bounce around within the different tribes. Sure I want to support as many as I can and that is what tagging, when applicable, does. I also hold a number of different tokens from tribes and delegate them to curation trails to put them to work within the communities.

However, my focus is upon Leofinance. That is where I put my efforts and the main tribe I support with my time and activity. Other tribes benefit but it has helped me to stand out.

We each have an approach, this is the one that seems to work for me.

Yes, that is kind of what I was getting at. I know it is to my detriment that I choose to have eclectic tastes. Those who focus on a single area tend to grow faster and larger now that we have full blow communities. It is encouraging to see, but ultimately people need to do what feels best for themselves.

In ListNerds, there is a fair number of people who blog in three or more communities. I have no idea if there is any advantage to that or not. I just use Peakd but I am curious should I spread my post across multiple communities. Thanks for sharing.

I use PeakD too unless I am posting financial stuff. Then I use the Leo front end. I think it is a matter of opinion really whether you specialize in one thing or spread it out. I like keeping my options open!

YES I think consistency is the key. At the very least comment every day if not write a post or people will forget about you very quickly.
Thanks for the great post.

I hear ya. Been there. I would need 240 hours in a day. I had to find the communities that fit my grove. :)

Hi, I'm new here; very interesting your publication. I think in my early days I will tend to post in various communities until I find the place where I feel most comfortable and that I feel will be useful to others. An overall growth as a person and on the platform is achieved by relating and engaging with others or building trust with each other.

That sounds like a smart idea!

Community is my favorite thing about Hive, truly! I have made so many friends over the past five years! I am especially grateful to have found the Listnerds community, ya'll rock!

Thanks for sharing this awesome post!
