See, I would have thought the same thing, but the data that I found from several sources says differently. Maybe their sample was skewed somehow.

E-mail is for certain useful as a marketing medium. It's also useful if you're part of a medical network which insists on doing everything online.
About the only thing e-mail isn't used for is personal correspondence, but even then e-mail comes in handy for anything where documentation of some sort is needed and mobile devices are insufficient for that.
Of course, e-mail was social networking before the term was invented.
E-mail is more useful to me than FAXing even though FAX machine technology has been around since the mid-1800s. We still use FAX machines (if only to comply with certain legal provisions for contract recognition).
