When You Are Worried, Read This.

We all inevitably have something to worry about. ‘All life is suffering’ as the Buddhists tell it.

One way or another, our human lives are tossed about in the winds of change and we cannot help but worry about what will come next.

As a class A ‘worry wort,’ I have figured out 4 ways to reduce my worries, here they are.

1) Write about it

At some point, a wise therapist suggested that I take up journaling to sort out my anxiety.

Once I started, I could not stop. I started carrying around a pocket-sized notebook everywhere I went. Any chance I had, I would pull it out and dump everything that was bouncing around in my head onto the paper.

Once a worry is written out on paper, it does not seem as big as it was in your head.

When you write down exactly what is worrying you, you take an intangible fear, pull it out by its roots, and force it to live within the lines of your notebook. It suddenly becomes manageable!

Once it is written down, you can move on to the next step.

2) Do something about it

Now that you have written out exactly what is worrying you, you can begin concocting a plan to defeat it.

Let us say that you are worried about how you are going to pay rent at the end of the month. Once you have that worry expressed, now you can write down your ideas on how you will make the money to pay it.

I find that of all things, numbers especially seem smaller once they are written down. On paper you can divide any number down into a monthly/weekly/daily amount.

Once you have divided your rent into how much you need to make per day, it suddenly becomes a much easier obstacle to cross.

3) Talk about it

For bigger worries, sometimes writing about it is just not enough.

Getting ideas out of your head can feel great, it can make your life feel a lot easier and you can relax more.

But sometimes, just having yourself to discuss a big topic with can make us spin in circles and feel even worse.

When it gets to this point, reach out to a friend, family member or a therapist for support. There are a lot of good people in the world that want to help you and make sure you are safe.

When you have a problem that you cannot figure out how to solve on your own, asking for advice from somebody you trust can make all the difference.

By asking for an outsider’s perspective, you can gain insight into your worry that is out of reach when you try to solve everything on your own.

4) Let it go

Sometimes we can get caught up worrying about things that turn out to be very small problems in the grand scheme of life.

When it comes to these issues, you need to ask yourself “Is this worry worth all of the time and energy I have been putting into it?”

If you have written about it, asked a friend about it, and all the signs point to this ‘worry’ actually being a non-issue, then just let it go.

Our human lives are incredibly short and there is an endless amount of beauty in the world. Spending our days anguishing over minor issues takes precious time away from enjoying our lives.

Take a hot bath, go for a hike, share a meal with people that you love. Let the little things sort themselves out and save your health for the bigger problems!
