It's interesting to see how things change now that reddit is rolling out community points. The vibe in those subs that have community points is very different from those without because of the money involved.
For retention, one thing that's overlooked I feel, is the user interface and way posts are organized. Too chaotic, especially with reblogs.

I tend to agree with you to some extent. I feel we need a very impactful sort of gamification. While I cannot really compare reddit to hive, I do believe that Reddit have been pulling in some good upgrades in other to stay revamped.
UI is also part of it, but definitely I feel the main work lies with the devs and trying to see if we're going to have more devs.
