49ers put Ricky Pearsall on NFI list after WR shot in chest

The San Francisco 49ers placed receiver Ricky Pearsall on the reserve/non-football injury list Monday, two days after he was shot in the chest during a robbery attempt in San Francisco.

The NFI designation means Pearsall must miss at least the first four games of his rookie season as he recovers. San Francisco signed offensive tackle Brandon Parker to a one-year deal to fill the open spot on the 53-man roster.

Pearsall was shot near San Francisco's Union Square on Saturday afternoon after a 17-year-old male from Tracy, California, attempted to rob him, resulting in a struggle between the two, according to the San Francisco Police Department. Both Pearsall and the suspect were shot during the struggle.

#sports #nfl #49ers #sanfrancisco

After Pearsall was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, police announced that he was in stable condition. He was upgraded to fair condition Sunday morning and released from the hospital soon after, less than 24 hours following the shooting.

Pearsall's mother posted on social media Sunday morning that her son had been shot in the chest with the bullet exiting his back and missing vital organs. Before the shooting, Pearsall had participated in an autograph signing at an event center before going to Union Square, ABC7 in San Francisco reported.

According to the police, Pearsall was walking alone shortly after 3:30 p.m. local time Saturday when the suspect attempted to rob him with a gun at the corner of Geary and Grant streets. The San Francisco Fire Department said a 911 call came in at 3:38 p.m. PT, with police and emergency personnel arriving soon after.

San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said the suspect was arrested right after the shooting. The initial investigation indicated he was acting alone "as far as we know," Scott said, adding that police would continue to scour the many surveillance cameras in the area as the probe continues.

Scott said there was "no indication" that the suspect had targeted Pearsall because he is a professional football player and added that there was one gun involved, with multiple shots fired.

Luis Suárez to retire from Uruguay after Friday's WC qualifier

Luis Suárez announced his retirement from the Uruguay national team in a news conference on Monday, saying he will step away from international duty after his team's World Cup qualifier against Paraguay on Friday.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona star, who is now playing with Inter Miami in MLS, departs as Uruguay's all-time leading scorer with 69 goals in 142 games across 17 years.

This was news that surprised many, undoubtedly the career of this great footballer is over and he managed to make history in the shower.

I dont follow the sport but I know it was a big annoucnement.

It was very strong for soccer fans.

Suárez made his senior debut for Uruguay on Feb. 8, 2007 in a 3-1 victory against Colombia and soon became an integral part of the squad. By 2010, he featured in 19 of the 20 World Cup qualifying matches to secure a spot for La Celeste at the tournament in South Africa.

The forward played a pivotal role in his first of four World Cups, starting five of Uruguay's six matches. During the quarterfinal against Ghana, Suarez committed an infamous handball in the final moments of the game, giving Ghana the chance to win the game with a penalty. Though Suárez was sent off, Asamoah Gyan missed the attempt and Uruguay went on to win the match via a penalty shootout and advance to the semifinals.

A few days ago, the Mets fell apart in Arizona in devastating fashion, allowing a grand slam in the 8th inning. The Mets fell to four games out of the last Wild Card spot, and things felt bleak. Since then, the Mets have won four straight games and gained three in the race. Entering play Monday, they are only one game out of the last Wild Card spot. With 25 games left this season, this month will be a wild ride.

Kodai Senga, Christian Scott Hopeful for End of Season

The Mets’ pitching rotation has been a surprising bright spot for them this season, even though it’s taken its fair share of hits. However, reinforcements, major ones too, might soon be on their way. The Mets provided injury updates on both Kodai Senga (calf strain) and Christian Scott (UCL sprain) Monday.

#nymets #pitchers #mlb #sports

Kodai Senga:

Senga, who suffered a calf strain in his only appearance this season, is working toward returning around September 26, when he’s eligible to come off the IL. Senga noted he understands the Mets’ final games might be their most important. If he’s not 100% by the time September 26 rolls around, he won’t push it. He did mention, however, that he is willing to appear in any capacity the Mets need him in if ready. This includes his usual starter role but also in a relief capacity.

In his one appearance this season, Senga allowed two hits, two runs, one walk and nine strikeouts in just over five innings pitched against Atlanta.

Entering Monday, the Mets sit one game behind division rival Braves for the final spot in the Wild Card race. While they face teams like the Reds and Blue Jays down the stretch, they have seven more games with the Phillies, three with the Braves and three with the Brewers. The last two weeks of the Mets’ season is a crucial stretch that will dictate their playoff fate, and having the likes of Senga and Scott would be a huge boost for this team.

Holy Crap on this one.

Russell Wilson named one of four Steelers captains

Seven months after becoming a Pittsburgh Steeler, quarterback Russell Wilson was selected to be one of four captains by his teammates for the 2024 season.

"He's a strong leader, and he brings veteran experience," said Miles Killebrew, who was also elected a team captain along with Cameron Heyward and T.J. Watt. "He's been doing it at a high level for a long time and I think with that experience [he] kind of calms nerves, and he can lead guys through various situations because he's seen it. He's seen a lot, so just a calming presence, I would say."

#nfl #steelers #sports

Before being named a captain, Wilson, who signed a one-year deal with the Steelers in March, was named the team's starting quarterback over Justin Fields days after the final preseason game. Though Wilson was limited throughout training camp and the preseason with a calf injury, his NFL experience and Super Bowl win were factors in him signing with the Steelers and landing the starting job.

"Russ' resume is a unique one in terms of lift and success, and that tends to play a factor in the decision-making, but not from a decision-maker's perspective," Tomlin said Wednesday. "It's just the fruit of his labor. He's seen a lot and done a lot, and I think it was reflected in the way he played and conducted himself."

The Steelers have traditionally elected their starting quarterback to be a captain. Former first-round pick Kenny Pickett was a captain in 2023, while Mitch Trubisky was a captain in 2022, retaining the title even after he was benched in Week 4. Ben Roethlisberger was also a captain for 13 seasons during Mike Tomlin's tenure.

Wilson was also elected to be a captain each of his two years with the Denver Broncos, and he was voted captain in nine of 10 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. Wilson has now been a team captain for 12 consecutive seasons, and the only time he wasn't one was his rookie campaign in 2012.

"On the offense side of the ball, there's a lot of leadership that was needed," Heyward said. "And I think he's ready for that. We'll see how he does, and if he has questions, ask me, T.J., Miles."

Willy Adames extends HR streak to 5 games, tying Brewers' record

Brewers shortstop Willy Adames extended his home run streak to five games to tie a team record when he hit a three-run drive in the first inning of Monday's 9-3 win against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Adames' homer, on his 29th birthday, came off Andre Pallante and was his 29th this season.

Adames tied the team mark of Jeromy Burnitz in 1997 and Eric Thames in 2017.

#sports #willyadames #brewers #mlb

"For the first time in my career, I got a little emotional," Adames said. "It's something that I've dreamed about since I was a kid. Just doing incredible things like that."

It was also the 13th three-run homer of the season for Adames, who joined Ken Griffey Jr. (1996) as the only players in major league history to do so. Sammy Sosa, Tino Martinez and Hall of Famer Roy Campanella each had 12 three-run homers in a single season.

"It's an honor, just to be right next to a legend and an icon like him," Adames said. "Seeing that reality today is just incredible."

Adames grounded out, flied out and then struck out in his next three at-bats during Monday's game.

Over time, both leagues grew in popularity and developed rivalries, with several teams switching between leagues during the early years of professional baseball. In 1903, the two leagues agreed to a truce and established the world Series as an annual championship competition.

Today, Major League Baseball is comprised of 30 teams – 15 from the American League and 15 from the National League – and has evolved into one of the most popular sports in the United States.

Major League Baseball (MLB) has its roots in the mid-19th century, when amateur baseball clubs began to form in cities like New York and Boston. However, it wasn't until 1876 that the first fully professional league was established – the National League of Professional Base Ball Clubs.

The National League consisted of eight teams: the Boston Red Stockings (now Atlanta Braves), Chicago White Stockings (now Chicago Cubs), Cincinnati Red Stockings (now Cincinnati Reds), Hartford Dark Blues, Louisville Grays, New York Mutuals, Philadelphia Athletics, and St. Louis Brown Stockings (now St. Louis Cardinals).

In 1901, the American League of Professional Baseball Clubs was founded by Ban Johnson as a direct competitor to the National League. The American League initially consisted of eight teams: Baltimore Orioles, Boston Americans (now Boston Red Sox), Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Broncos (now Cleveland Guardians), Detroit Tigers, Milwaukee Brewers (moved to St. Paul in 1902 and became the St. Paul Saints), Philadelphia Athletics, and Washington Senators (now Minnesota Twins).

Mets winning 4-1 in top of 6th

Does the Boston team have a pair of socks as their team crest? LOL

They stole them from @bradleyarrow. He likes to go barefoot.

LOL

Does that mean they even stole his socks? This team should be in prison hahaha...

Good thing the Mets beat them.

2 on for the Red Sox.

Need to get out of this inning. Severino is faltering a bit.

He got out of the inning. Going to the bottom of the 6th.

McNeil struck out. Marte up.

Marte grounds out.

DJ Stewart flies out (I didnt know he was back from the minors).

Going to the top of the 7th.

A leadoff walk to start the 7th.

2 out...a flyout to LF.

Fly out to right. 3 out. Going to the bottom of the 7th.

Torrens leads off. Not sure where Alvarez is.

Lindor struck out.

Bad at bats for the Mets. Lead off double and then three strikeouts.

They are still leading. Maybe get a run or two in the bottom of the 8th.

Going to the bottom of the 8th. Still 4-1 Mets.

Mets won 4-1. They took the first game of the series with the Red Sox.

Alemanha

#newsonleo #sports #tennis

#newsonleo #sports #vasco
