After reading Azircon's post this morning Democracy Dies In Silence which was interesting and informative on a number of levels what stood out for myself was the real number of active HIVE accounts. The figure of 4779 accounts is a being real number and is lower than I expected or presumed considering HIVE has 2 564 431 registered accounts. Being real is how we should think as many of us have an alt account and that does not really count as another user.
When you consider such a low figure of 4779 accounts you start to realise how important it is for accounts to hold on to their stake and curate themselves. When I say themselves I mean not delegate a high percentage out thinking you are helping because this is not helping you grow.
To give you an example my vote is worth in the region of 7 HIVE per 100% vote so I would make 50% so 3.5 HIVE x 10 votes daily totaling 245 HIVE per week. Why would I delegate that amount out as I am also supporting others I follow and find when curating with 245 HIVE weekly. The comments on my posts receive a 5% upvote as a thank you for taking the time and reading the article whether they have upvoted the post or not.
The HIVE eco system needs accounts that hold some value curating which in time helps all accounts whoa are active grow. I noticed one account yesterday who has been here for many years delegating out 99% of their stake and offer no value to the accounts they follow. That is fine if you want to stagnate your growth because that is exactly what will happen.
This is like an island account that expects everyone to come to them and never goes and visits other accounts. In the past these accounts were known for self voting and eventually died a slow death as they never received support. HIVE is a community and you cannot grow on your own and yes you do rely on others for support.
The question is then why is it suddenly a thing to delegate out so much of your real HIVE value. Delegating out because you are promised a vote in return is the same as self voting and in many ways is no different from an island account.
If you are new on HIVE do not fall into the trap of thinking delegating is a short cut to growth and my advice is to grow your HIVE stake first before even considering to delegate. I get the idea you want to support a project, but you are of more value to the project once you have started to grow and have some value behind you account. This may seem obvious too many of us, but obviously many do not understand how HIVE works. I really wished these delegation projects would advise those delegating and have a type of percentage limit in place.
Knowing there are less than 5000 active HIVE accounts meaning there is a human tapping the keys on a key board surely it should tell you this represents an opportunity to grow. I cannot spell this out any simpler than that really and if you don't get it then there is no hope. Thee are no short cuts here unless you invest money and buy more HIVE otherwise you stay active and grow organically.
HIVE requires no investment as I am proof having grown from 0 and yes it takes time and effort, but anything in life that has any value attached takes some type of commitment or it would hold no value.

I delegate out approximately 50% of my HP, primarily to projects that share most or all of the curation rewards to delegators. I do this because I know there will be occasions that I just don't have the time to be on Hive. It's a way for my stake (or at least part of it) to keep earning even on those relatively rare days I can't give it the attention I should.
Having said that, I don't intend to ever delegate more than 50% of my stake and I will probably reduce or remove those delegations at some point.

I personally delegated more than 50% of my hive mainly because I'm not active here all the time. So instead of letting upvote sleep, I made a good use of them by delegating to the accounts that I support. But after reading your post, it made me question my choice though. May I know when do you consider your account a "grown account" already?
Good question ad it depends how active you are. Nothing wrong with delegating as long as you know the higher the percentage given out the slower your growth will be. I would definitely not delegate until I had achieved 10k HP. Giving 50% is ok if you still hold value so you can grow.10% annually from curation plus the compounding of the 3% APR is 13% and with growth is more like 15%. You don't spend a lot of time here, but could log in for 10 minutes a day and vote 20 posts manually. In no time you would see your HIVE account moving on a consistent upward trend.
Man that post you refer to was depressing, I understand that people dont like AI and spammers, but the overall vibe was like it bad to make many comments or psoting to much.
Just imagine if Facebook or X had tried to make you less active.
Or maybe I was how I interpret the post plus comment
At the beginning I was thinking about doing that, delegate the few HP I had to some projects, but then I read a post saying this and I decided to not to do it and to grow my own HP instead. Now I have 300+ HP in 6 months, and I think it's a good pace for a newbie like me.
I really appreciate posts like this, it gives me hope and inspiration to keep on building.
I don't know who is "preaching" that to newbies, but I saw an alarming number of accounts that do that... along with creating posts in GEM, OCD community thinking that will give them upvotes, or commenting on every post with "nice comment", or just ass kissing whales by stalking on their comments and posts...
It became ridiculous how people created a science about HIVE... What to do, what steps to take, etc... While it is super simple...
Create posts where they add value to readers, respect your audience, and support others with your HP stake... Simple as that! No science at all!

This is very true, I have just decided to stack up the HP, yeah it ain't much cos I'm getting started so just aiming for the first 1000HP that continue. Perhaps in the future when the stakes are strong and plenty I'll delegate to support but it's growth time for me
Very nice post. I am at just over ten thousand HP, but I consider myself a beginner on Hive. I guess having only 5k accounts that are active means that those who are active have access to more Hive rewards because the rest of 2+ million accounts are not really getting the rewards they can be getting. Also, 5k accounts means opportunity for growth of Hive is huge.
Man super impressive that you grew from zero! You may have told me before and I forgot, but I'd have assumed you put funds in. More power to you man!
Also I agree with everything you've said here 👍🏻
