Hive communities officially arrived in February 2020. Before this there was in a test phase that starting from October 2020.
Communities should allow users to find content of their interest easier and also post in the communities of their interest, allowing them to connect more with people alike. It should help discovering content as well.
With the media tokens updated communities can have their own tokens in the future.
Here we will be looking into the following things:
- Number of Communities created
- Top Communities by number of subscribers
- Top Communities subscribers stake
- Communities growth with subscribers
Number of Communities created
First lets see the total number of communities created with time.
As already mentioned, communities went live officially in February 2020, but they were in a test phase before that. The period above is from November 2019 till June 22, 2020. There is some small number of communities created in October but for better visibility those are left over from the chart.
We can notice that there are communities created before the official launch date, but the spike in the number of communities created is quite visible in February. On February 20, there was more than 200 communities created. Afterwards the number dropped and lately its in the range between 5 and 10 per day.
Almost 2000 communities exist now on the Hive blockchain.
Top Communities by number of subscribers
What are the top communities on the blockchain?
We will be looking at this by more than one parameter, but for starters lets take a look at the most obvious one, the number of subscribers.
Here is the chart.
The @gems community comes first with 6.4k subscribers, followed by @ocd and @dtube.
Some other know communities there as @hive.gaming, @powerhousecreative and @leofinance with more than 2000 subscribers.
Last time I check these numbers the top community had just above 5k. Now they are above 6k. Also just a few others communities had more than 2k subs. Now we are seeing more of them.
There is more than 20k unique accounts that subscribed to a community. This number can also give us a hint about active accounts.
Top Communities by subscribers’ stake
Another interesting way to rank communities is the stake of their subscribers. After all we are on a DPoS chain 😊.
What is the stake weight of the subscribers in each community?
Here is the chart.
In this type of ranking the @hivedevs community comes on the top with around 27M HP of subscriber’s stake. The number of subscribers in the community is around 1000, but obviously the members there have a lot stake. On the second and third place are gems and ocd, the same that ranks well with number of subscribers as well. LeoFinance comes fourth.
Communities growth with subscribers
At the end a chart with few of the communities that have showed a nice growth in the past months.
The HiveGaming community has done well growing to almost 3k subscribers. LeoFinance, OnChainArt, Natural Medicine all have gained significant numbers of subscribers reaching more than 2k. The Photography Lovers is an interesting one, although started later it has grown very fast and at the top.
Hope to see more communities and more development on this side 😊.
All the best

Some communities will maintain significant growth overtime, while others will not having grown to a particular peak. I do believe it's all about timing. Leofinance too has come a long way.
Communities that are not whale backed or tribe backed are always going to take the lions share people gravitate to the rewards in HIVE or tokens
I think this is why I like SMTs idea it will give each community the ability to compete for readers, members and authors and that's going to make things far now interesting
I mean honestly is anyone subscribing to gems to read anything there? I know I don't it's a lot of trash lol
your assessment is totally correct buddy that's why I feel the SMTs coming will be really feasible in placing growth stats for the communities really and probably not because they're whales backed.
creo que también hacen falta comunidades sobre crecimiento personal y Coaching. En estos tiempos de pandemia es importante contribuir a la tranquilidad emocional de los miembros de nuestra comunidad
Very good
Well done, @dalz.
