Loss of confidence

I was watching a derby match between Manchester United and Manchester city yesterday. Are you surprised I am talking about football? Don't be, it is my favorite sport although I haven't had much time to key into it as it used to be when I was growing up. I played and also loved watching the matches, both at local settings and from the television.

Football is a game that is worth your time, maybe I am saying this because I love it, anyway, it is the most known sport. There is always a need to make the most of your time, you never can tell what the future holds. Everyday I wake up is to solve a customer's problem, that's my new twist.

So what really called my attention to this match? Well, it is because of the current loss of form by Manchester City. Considering how dominant this club has turned out to be in almost a decade, you should be surprised to see such poor records. Before the game, they had won just one of their last seven domestic matches and 1 in their last 10 when including European competitions. These are the current Premier League champions with not just back to back league records but also historical four times consecutive champions.

You can imagine the dominance, so when I heard they were losing matches, I was in doubt. Of course I can flip through football scores to confirm this which I did, yet I was not still convinced, how are they playing?. The consecutiveness looked bizarre so I decided to make out time and watch the match yesterday. Even my brother was a little surprised considering how choking work is currently in the office.

What I saw

They are known to play good football, dominating an entire match is mostly their thing. I saw them displaying their usual behavior, especially on their home ground. Nevertheless there was something I was observing about the match, their confidence had faded. They played no doubt, yet not as it used to be. There was a high level of fear from their bench, coach and even those at the pitch. Remember, they have won 1 in their last 10 matches, the trauma was in their head. I could imagine each player thinking, could it still remain 1 win in the last 11? Their pressing was one with included awareness that they are now very vulnerable.

Even after leading the match nearing the close of the first half, there was not much difference in play during the second half. They remained very conscious hoping for the final whistle to come. The normal Man city I know do not settle for a single goal, the pressure is always unending until they make it two or three. As I said, they no longer have confidence in their ball play, their coach, their home fans, their stadium, their teammates and individual self because of a repetitive negative record.

As funny as it may sound, they ended up losing the match. Manchester United equalized and added another. Two goals in two minutes within the 80th minute can summarize how bad their confidence has been.

I never wanted to talk much about this match but here I am. My idea was to link this up with what is currently going on in the Nigerian economy. There was a time when the naira was bigger than the dollar before the later equation. As if this was not enough, the currency value slagged and the dollar was now dominating. This was where the tale of no confidence started a full display. When confidence is lost on a commodity, depreciation is inevitable. This is what Nigerian citizens are facing. As of 2013, a dollar was equal to N160. By then everyone was complaining how poor the economy had gone. This was just the beginning, what are they saying now as Naira continues to dangle, we even saw it reach N1900 early this year.

The Nigerian economy is suffering the fate of confidence loss in the currency which affects the economic production and GDP at large. There is a fear that there will be no recovery and even after one year of the newly elected President it still stands true. Many Nigerians are planning for safe heaven or greener pastures outside this country.

The things you here this days from people around is either 'I am leaving this country or if/when I have to opportunity to leave this country, there will be no second thoughts'. I can't decide for anyone, they know what they are facing, it just that I always feel bad when I look back to check such records this country had that has been dragged to the mud.

To conclude, let me add, I pray for the best for this dear country. There is no doubt, no matter where you stray to, home is home. Will Man city recover soonest from their flaws? It is more likely yet the issue of the Nigerian economy is something else entirely. It is not that I wish being negative about the current situations of the country, nevertheless, when the proper moves are yet to be made by governing bodies what more can we say. Yes, I believe in miracles, yet we should not try to stretch our creator through our ignorance, I only hope he reconsiders us.

Haha Pep is stressed, welcome to the real world where you have to really manage now! When your world beating players need help and motivation and yes confidence.

At least Rangers had a go yesterday and lost on penalties to Celtic!

They've really been put to the test. The earlier the recover from this shock, the better.

Ahh!! Sorry for your loss to Celtic, I know it's your rivalry. That's football, one team prevails during elimination stages.
