Blue and white and white being the color of ice and snow and yellow/orange/red being the color of fire it kind of makes it intuitive. Unless you are just afraid of red or something.
Why? For as long as I remember, weather maps have used yellows, oranges and reds for higher temperatures and various shades of blue, sometimes pink and white for colder temperatures. Makes it easy to get a lot more info at a glance.

It’s obviously from the pic. Years ago way more hot and no fear monger attention omg climate change graphics. Fast forward to past 18 months and it’s fear fear fear. Not much else to explain.
Color temperature maps have also been around for decades. Not sure where this photo is from but most weather temp maps are colorized in a similar manner and have been since at least the 1980s, a time when nobody was talking about climate.
