The crawler-transporters were originally put into service in 1965 to carry the Saturn IB and Saturn V from the VAB to the launch pad, a trip of 3.4 to 4.2 miles depending on which pad.

Later, from 1981 to 2011 they were used to transport the Space Shuttle.

They each way 6 million pounds and until 2013 they were the largest self-powered land vehicles in the world.

They move at a max speed of 1 MPH so the trip to the launch pad takes 5-6 hours.

Moving forward, they will continue to be used for the Space Launch System.
