You've made some good points here. I tend to take a similar approach with long term investments and ensuring I have some "skin in the game" at all times.
For me, if I have something invested then my interest is assured. I only have a small amount invested right now, and that's purely a reflection of the status of my financial recovery at the moment.

Skin in the game is a great way of putting it.. having some skin in the game will always keep your interest high and will allow you to continually learn & grow
