#historyonleo #onthisday On March 1st Soviet Russian sailors and marines stationed in Kronstadt base near Petrograd (today's St. Petersburg) rise against the rule of Bolshevik party. The uprising, supported by non-Bolshevik socialists and anarchists, represents particularly dangerous challenge for Bolsheviks, because those very sailors played crucial part in Bolshevik takeover of Russia in 1917. Red Army forces led by Leon Trotsky act quickly and crush the uprising within sixteen days. Kronstadt Rebellion and its bloody suppression created permanent split between Anarchists and Communists within Russian and global Left.
