#historyonleo #onthisday On February 22nd 1797 1400 French soldiers land on coast of Wales near Fishguard. Operation, conducted during the War of First Coalition, intended to support rebellion by Society of United Irishmen. French expedition is poorly led and organised and, despite numerical superiority, was forced to surrender to 500 strong local militia after two days of fighting. This event represented the last land invasion of Britain in history. French made similar and equally unsuccessful attempt in Ireland a year later during Wolf Tone's rebellion.
