Glad I was raised in a home that constantly preached being myself rather than being average... I think I've been better off for taking this advice. I've had quite a few different careers and led quite a few different lives if I'm being completely honest. But I rather like the bit about falling, learning, and getting back up to do it all again, but differently, more authentically. Like you said, the money buys comfort, it buys options, it buys choice, but in the absence of it all we still have ourselves, our connections, our relationships to sustain us even as the money becomes increasingly worthless.
