2 things come to mind: history repeats itself (and mankind is responsible for not learning from its errors); also, that we were sort of shielded from many bad things in childhood, and now are more attentive, in part thanks to social media.
Many people feel the same way, but in reality, wars, attacks, economic crises and suffering have always been with us.
The protection of our parents and the carefree spirit of youth are walls against the horrors of life.
I've lived through the times of IRA bombings in the UK, Falklands invasion, war in former Yugoslavia, various other wars, SARS pandemic and other crises. Some things are caused by bad people, others by nature or incompetence.
