People hate paywalls. But I feel patreon, subscription, unlock systems have created more sustanainable creator future. New generation is good with paying for content than pre 1980 era people who were tight on wallet. Just an observation.

I think it’s all about value
A great sub stack is easily worth $4.99 and you’re paying it to a great creator as opposed to a faceless New York Times subscription in the past
The creator economy needs monetization
"Zen Pencils" a good example of creator for who people don't hesitate to support.
Journalism is behind a paywall. Rumor and conjecture are free.
I hate setting a paywall. I would much rather work on a gift system, but people aren’t trained for that, so I am very strict with pricing on some things and offer a lot for free
