There was a Matt Rosen before Splinterlands! There really was! I have proof! 😘 And he was very dedicated to the chain he was on and what it represented but represents no more. 😉 Luckily, Hive took over some of those attributes and Matt (and Splinterlands) are here now.
One of the other days I came across one of his early apps on the legacy chain, adapted for and maintained on Hive by @nuthman.
It's a simple app, which looks like this:
On it, you can watch your (or anyone else's) HIVE Power increase in real time. You might wonder why would you need that.
Well, it's fun to watch that HP grow. And it grows, because 15% of the HIVE inflation goes to HIVE stakeholders and is distributed at every block (every 3 seconds) without any transaction that tells you that your HP increases thanks to it.
For example, when I look at my account (including the delegation from the staking account), my account growth every 3 seconds is by around 0.0003 HIVE, so 4 digits after the decimal point.
It seems little, but at this rate, it means 0.0003x20 = 0.006 HP per minute, 0.006x60 = 0.36 HP per hour, 0.36x24 = 8.64 HP per day, and a whooping 8.64x365 = 3153.6 HP per year.
So, pay attention to the passive rewards on your HIVE Power! They add up!
This may even give birth to some new kind of goals related to HIVE Power. In my case, for example, I might want to reach 3 digits of HP adjustment per block instead of 4 digits, meaning 0.001 HP every 3 seconds instead of 0.0003 HP now. That wouldn't be an easy target to reach. I'll be an orca well before reaching such a goal.
Have a look at your own account and see how it grows from this HP interest in real time, although they don't call it interest.

I keep forgetting about that app. I've wanted to add more features, but honestly haven't had the time! Glad to see someone is using it.
You'd be happy to know that since then a couple more people tried it out! I always liked it, but forgot about it since we moved to Hive. It's not something I'd use every day, but every once in a while it's nice to see HP working passively. Thanks for keeping it running at least!
I remember using it back on the old chain, and I'd show it to new users to give them a visual idea of how stake increases over time. When it went away, I asked Matt if he minded if I revived it. I added a few decimal points to the HP so that even people with really low stake could still see it growing.
Surprisingly, it really helps it to click with people who aren't getting it!
I agree. It's a perfect exemplification of how HP "interest" works, since no visible traces for the regular users are left on chain to see it in action.
It's an interesting to look at. Most of us don't realize the gains because we don't have that much HP but Hive is amazing because of that growth.
Even if one doesn't have lots of HP, given enough time, more accrues. 3k+ HP in a year is not a small thing, even at my account size.
I remember this from steem. It used to move a lot slower back in those days.
Yep. Well, if you were checking out your account, I assume you had a much smaller stake then, thus the difference in speed. Otherwise I think it was still 15% of inflation? Or maybe not.
That is a cool app! I didn't realize the dynamics behind the rewards in every block, great info! Yet one more reason to love our Hive ecosystem!
Yep! That is pretty cool, for sure!
Yeahhhh!!! Good find because this is fun :)
Yes, it is! I know it from the legacy chain, but didn't know there was a version kept for Hive until recently.
Wow
I’d love to check how my little HP is growing😁😁
Do it! Grows even if you have a little HP. And if someone has loo little HP to add the minimum of 0.001 to the HP, it adds up in the background until 0.001 HP is reached and then it adds it.
