Three potato, two hundred and twenty-four! Okay, maybe not quite that many. In fact, this year I planted the least amount of potatoes that I have in many years, only fifty row feet!
Truly, with the kids moving out and our life direction shifting, I scaled way back for what I hope might be obvious reasons. Plus, the idea of attending to just fifty row feet of potatoes is most appealing to me. Get it? Heh.
Sorry, I haven't had much sleep and am still going full threat level midnight speed due to being the boy's courier until at least this Friday. Yay parts delays!
I also got the snow peas planted, a succession of radishes and lettuce in, and the green onions transplanted. It was a very productive day, and that was before I made homemade sourdough pizza!
I, sadly, didn't get a picture of my long fermented sourdough pizza that I topped with bacon, pepperoni, sauteed onions and green bell peppers, and olives. But let me tell you, after the incredible amount of shoveling of compost and raking soil that I did yesterday, I wasn't sad about eating a couple huge slices of that delightful thing. Not even a little bit or at all.
I did, however, get repeatedly distracted by all the emerging beauty at my old burned old growth larch stump flower garden. The squill has been up for awhile, but the hyacinths just exploded out of the ground in the last day or two, and I love me some hyacinths.
I then though, got more than a little startled by just how much the rhubarb has grown this past week alone. I'll be up to my elbows in compote and crumble before too long.
Yep. Not sad about that upcoming situation at all. Nope.
Today, I really should get the tomato sprouts transplanted, but I still have to drive the boy to and from work, which takes about an hour and a half if traffic isn't bad, and to be quite honest, after a lack of sleep, all the farming I have done in the past couple of days, and a huge amount of schoolwork getting completed by yours truly, I might just come home and watch Father Brown. The next three days are going to be especially wild and might need to rest up for that.
But as most who homestead know, the words rest and spring don't really go well together, so I will probably be chorin til dark.

You certainly have plenty of canine and feline "help."
Since you are planting potatoes, I guess I better get on with that, too. I am trying to figure out how to garden without tilling and without using much water, since our water company wants to raise our rates by 79%. Hmmm.
It is amazing how "helpful," they try to be. Right now the Void is trying to bite my fingers in between staring at me with no small amount of judgment as I type this...
79%!!! Yeeouch!
I got a notice a bit ago that our power rates are going up, again. But nothing to the tune of 79%, that's more than a bit steep! Good luck with the planting and irrigation, I think I would be heading to Athol and getting a bunch of water catchment barrels lol!

I wonder how early in the season I'd have to start collecting rainwater to get me through the entire summer? And would I have the energy to painstakingly water the entire garden by hand, out of the barrels? Not likely. My brain really likes the idea, but my body has other thoughts.
Potatoes planted, cat supervising, and you powering through on no sleep — now that’s true homesteading spirit! Hope you get a break soon... maybe even with a little Father Brown!"
I got one episode in before I passed out, so I am feeling pretty accomplished lol!
Hope you have a very excellent Thursday!

Do you plant for domestic or commercial use?
Just domestic use these days, it's much more pleasant😊

The void is always a welcome sight 😻 That's still a lot of potatoes!
I got rid of my rhubarb, Decided that anything that was going to need that much sugar just to make it edible was not worth it. I've not eaten rhubarb before and it was a volunteer in a seedling tray. But space is a a premium in my vegetable garden so off it went!
