Prelude To All The Things

Near the end of winter, I get all sorts of flighty. Well, maybe flighty isn't the right descriptor. Antsy might be better. There's always work to do around here, but the desire to get cracking peaks right around the beginning of March for me.

You see, I still have a nice patina of snow covering the farm, March brings on Mud Season, so it's not like I can get a ton of work done because everything is a bit soggy as we go through the yearly dance known as break up. As the frost comes out of the ground my driveway becomes something akin to the Moyie Mud Bogs, a yearly Mother's Day Weekend event of vehicles and mud traversing excellence.

Last night, as the hubs and I traversed our road I noticed that our road has definitely entered into break up phase. The ruts have begun!

Now, break up, aka Mud Season, tends to last about a month, sometimes longer, depending on how much snow and cold we got, how much rain we get, and other factors. I am kind of hoping it's not too drawn out this year as we have some big events happening on the farm in late spring (the boy's graduation party!), and I would love to have a few extra weeks to get the farm whipped into shape for it all.

Okay, and I really, really want to grow all the things.

This morning I gave my onion seedlings their first hair cut. Yep, you read that right, you gotta cut their tops off or they will fall over and get all sad and whither away. I still need to check my peppers, they are all starting to sprout, so I will be transplanting them soon, and thanks to getting the stupid flu, I am a couple days behind on my ranunculus corm soaking and sprouting and flower seed starting. It's okay though, I think I will get to that tomorrow.

The sun's out though, so I am most effervescent about all that is to come on the homestead. I can't wait for the rest of the snow to melt so I can see my garlic sprouting out of the ground. There's raking to do and branches to burn from this past winter's storms. I have always got tickled at people who say they are bored as I am never without things to do. In fact, here lately I would have really appreciated a Kat-clone to help out with chores while I was an immune system slain pile of goo.

But seriously, the sun is out so even though I feel like a pile of bovine fecal matter, my spirits are on the rise.

Of course, that could be my temperature, there's been a lot of that lately 😉

And as most of the time, all of the images in this post were taken on the author's not too active lately iPhone.

I wake up every day hopeful I can chip a little more ice off my sidewalks. It's been horrible! But I started some lettuce and shallot seeds, so I am underway. Good to know about trimming the onions.

Glad you're feeling a little better at least.

Ooh, shallots, yum! I can only imagine the culinary greatness you create with them😊

I'm currently sitting out in the sun wrapped in a fleece blanket, it's doing wonders for my overall vibe. Hope that ice is melting away!

Yeah, we got a bit of a melt earlier this week, mud appeared. But it's snowing now, soon to turn to rain for the rest of the day. Oh, boy! More mud! Sigh...

Aww, it's the start of mud season for you too! My driveway is so nasty, but I don't care because the sun's out! Lol!

I never knew people give their pets haircuts
That’s actually cute though
Shows you’re taking a good care of them

Well, I do think of a lot of my plants as pets, so I guess it counts, and yep, I give my onions and many of my pets haircuts so I definitely care about them, you're so right!
