I have gotten into this conversation a few times and it's somehow complicated. I believe whoever has committed a crime should be punished and yet there should be exceptions.

A crime is indeed a crime and no one should be above the law but I think there are crimes that can be overlooked because of the motive behind them. Sometimes, the culprits don't have other choices and just do what they have to.
