Authorities in at least 18 prefectures in Japan have received threats from Bitcoin extortionists since July. In each case, the school or administration received an email with promises to organize an explosion if the requirements are not met, J-Cast News reports.
The amount of ransom varies. For example, in Yamagata city they received a letter demanding payment of 40 Bitcoins or $450,000 at the current rate. Despite the cybercriminals' active work, there were no reports that any of the victims actually sent them the requested amount.
The criminals are at large and do not abandon attempts to get what they want. To send letters they choose isolated cities with specialization in agriculture. In the authors' opinion, low technical skills of potential victims could be one of the factors that made none of them send crypt currency to the attackers.
"Last year I received a bunch of strange letters demanding to send bitcoins. I wonder if these are the same people. - stated the interlocutor of the edition.
"The administration of Asahi also received threats, but first of all they do not have any bitcoins," said another.
"In my district, they also threatened to organize an explosion last week. As far as I know, they demanded bitcoins, but nobody paid and nothing happened. This is very annoying," the third added.
Some suggest that the reason the intruders are demanding payment in the crypt currency is because they are abroad.
