Paul in 1st Timothy refers to the original universal church (Catholic 1st coined by St Ignatius in the 2nd century) as:

"...the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth."

This is was the heart of the Roman Empire.

Catholic Christians were often seen as odd and subversive because they refused to worship the Roman gods or the emperor.

This led to social ostracism, slander, and occasional mob violence, especially in cities with strong pagan or Jewish opposition—like Ephesus, where Timothy was stationed.

Paul emphasizes endurance, godliness, and guarding the faith, likely knowing trouble was coming.
