#threadstorm

I used to shy away from the news but I've come to like reading some of them while contributing and adding data to the 'newsonleo' here on threads. Doing that at least keeps me updated on some and not totally out of the loop.

Today, let me highlight some of the trending ones, particularly in my country, the Philippines. They had been in the headlines for a few days now.

Sort:

One of the headlines in the last 3 days is the news that CNN Philippines, a franchise of the US-based news channel, shutting down its operation.

That was confirmed with the announcement yesterday that the TV network is indeed turning its final page and no longer be operating starting tomorrow, 31st of January.

The franchise has been in operation in the country for 9 years and its contract is until the end of 2024 but it ended earlier. The closure is said to be due to financial losses that were worsened by the pandemic years.

The last show signed off yesterday morning.

The next one, perhaps one of the most controversial news yet (even years ago) is the proposal to amend the Philippine Constitution through the so-called Charter Change or Cha-Cha.

It is causing disagreements and bickering amongst the proponents, critics, and who else. The Senate and Congress are divided, the former against it, the latter pushing for it to go forth.

3🧵

It's even seen as one of the reasons why the Marcos-Duterte alliance is being severed, with former President Duterte warning Marcos not to push the Cha-Cha or he might be ousted from Malacanang.

The Senate hearing this morning also showed how heated the discussions are getting, especially with one of the modalities being questioned.
