Yes in order to deposit into the pool, you need equal fiat value of both sides. So you can visit sushiswap and convert pHBD into USDC for the pair.

Note to self if I want to put a hundred bucks worth of HBD I must have a hundred bucks worth of USDC

Or you can swap $50 of HBD into $50 of USDC and add that to the pool. Of course, you have to eat some fees and some price impact from the swap.
