Something I can relate with... It's been like 2-3 months we are looking for house to rent on suitable price and full set... But so far not even a single one.
Mostly expensive and not what we looking for.
I think that is where they compromise lies. Some of the houses you might want might be too expensive for you. In Nigeria more difficult. I have been so frustrated for a while now I don't even know what to do anymore

It's probably bigger than some countries. But it is a very big place. A lot of real estate agents take advantage of people just to make money

Why financially draining? How do things work there?
Real estate agents collect money from you to help you get houses Only for them to get you shitty places. You might need close to 10 agents to get a good place, but you'll probably spend a fortune.
Realtors are big criminals in Nigeria. Some people collect money to get you a house only not to deliver.
As for landlords. Most of them give house to only 9 to 5, anything other than that to them is a scam
Fuck that sucks.
In the US they are regulated.
