Debt is modern slavery - Bhagavad Gita ch4:22

in LeoFinance2 days ago

I have never been in debt to anyone in my entire adult life, as I approach retirement. Do you know what a sense of freedom that gives? And a feeling of independence. Few can say this today in our debt-based economy.

This is because my happiness is not dependant on too much consumer goods. My needs are few. Modern society pushes needs on us that are not necessary. Advertising facilitates that. And engineered inflation keeps us chasing too keep up.

Being adverse to debt means only buying my car when I have cash, only renting, never buying property, keeping life simple, yet sublime. And sovereign. Here in South Africa even owning land is no longer safe as the government introduces a land expropriation law.

If I can't afford it then I don't buy it. I earn all my money by my own wits honestly. I've never had an inheritance from relatives. I'm self made.

Gains may come and they may go. Any long term cryptocurrency investor knows the feeling. Yet happiness is not dependent on them. A smart investor does not allow fear or greed to cloud peace of mind.

The wise know that everything is going on by higher arrangement and they cultivate equipoise in gain or loss. Without debt you are free and don't depend on anyone, not even price.

No albatross around the neck is worth it in my life. You may be different of course. You may have kids. That requires a lot more facility.

Kids require education, which in some countries places them in massive debt from the very start of their adult life. It's a harsh system. Imagine living under the burden of debt your entire adult life? Like a prisoner. I run a mile at the thought. Yet so many in the world are groomed into this by the elite who run the economy for their benefit.

Fear and greed keep us enslaved by debt most of our lives. By the time we pay it off, we're too old to do much. Whatever you do, think twice about falling victim to fear and greed, as well as debt. You end up paying more than you should.

Listen to the words of wisdom dating back millennia regarding the attitude required in order to experience happiness. Otherwise life will teach you the same thing the hard way.

Bhagavad Gita ch4:22

yadṛcchā-lābha-santuṣṭo
dvandvātīto vimatsaraḥ
samaḥ siddhāv asiddhau ca
kṛtvāpi na nibadhyate

SYNONYMS
yadṛcchā—out of its own accord; lābha—gain; santuṣṭaḥ—satisfied; dvandva—duality; atītaḥ—surpassed; vimatsaraḥ—free from envy; samaḥ—steady; siddhau—in success; asiddhau—failure; ca—also; kṛtvā—doing; api—although; na—never; nibadhyate—is affected

TRANSLATION
He who is satisfied with gain which comes of its own accord, who is free from duality and does not envy, who is steady both in success and failure, is never entangled, although performing actions.

PURPORT
A Kṛṣṇa conscious person does not make much endeavor even to maintain his body. He is satisfied with gains which are obtained of their own accord. He neither begs nor borrows, but he labors honestly as far as is in his power, and is satisfied with whatever is obtained by his own honest labor. He is therefore independant in his livelihood. He does not allow anyone's service to hamper his own service in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. However, for the service of the Lord he can participate in any kind of action without being disturbed by the duality of the material world. The duality of the material world is felt in terms of heat and cold, or misery and happiness. A Kṛṣṇa conscious person is above duality because he does not hesitate to act in any way for the satisfaction of Kṛṣṇa. Therefore he is steady both in success and in failure. These signs are visible when one is fully in transcendental knowledge.

I am amazed with the relationship between the ancient Bhagavad Gita and the financial field. it's very good!

I agree with you, debts in the end put us in a situation where your mind may be all the time thinking that “you have to pay” as soon as possible. Well it depends on the person, but I'm that type, lol.

Very good post!

Thank you for your positive feedback Belug, you are a rare good soul that can appreciate the correlation between the ancient texts and today's life. The world of finance is a great teacher in itself, and the Gita insight adds to the realization.

Best wishes from the south coast of Africa.
