Fake Crypto on Kenya Police Social Media Accounts

Hackers have recently targeted the social media accounts of Kenya's Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), using them to promote fake crypto schemes.

According to Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), its X and Facebook accounts were briefly compromised, with hackers posting misleading information about a blockchain project and a crypto token called $DCI.

Similar incidents have occurred with other Kenyan media outlets, such as KBC and K24 TV, where hackers also promoted cryptocurrency scams after taking control of their social media accounts.

The X and Facebook accounts of DCI were hacked for a short period, during which false information about crypto investments was posted. The Department has since regained control and clarified that these messages are not legitimate.

The X account of KBC was hacked by the hackers who changed the handle to mimic an AI chatbot DeepSeek AI. They used this platform to promote what appeared to be a crypto scam.

K24 TV's X account was also hacked around February 6, 2025. Initially transformed into a celebrity's fan page, it was used to disseminate crypto schemes before losing over three million followers due to the breach.

These events underline an increasing trend in cybercrime where high-profile social media accounts are hijacked for fraudulent activities like promoting fake crypto or scams.

Scammers often use phishing emails or malware designed to steal session cookies from targets' devices. This allows them to bypass security measures such as two-factor authentication.

Once the scammers gain access, they use these platforms to broadcast posts promising high returns on investments but ultimately lead victims into financial traps.

In some cases, hackers rebrand compromised accounts by changing handles or profiles (e.g., transforming KBC’s account into "DeepSeek AI") in attempts to leverage credibility for their scams.

Cybersecurity experts call attention to the need for strong security measures against such sophisticated attacks on digital assets.
