Return of the Nikkei Cultural Center Coin Show, Part 2

“Black birds tend to like shiny things.” ~ The Bloody Raven

The next show will put on again by the North Shore Numismatic Society, a local club originally located in North Vancouver that currently meets monthly in Burnaby’s Bonsor Recreational center, located only a few kilometers west of the Nikkei Center.

With insightful seminars, a buying or trading opportunity, coffee, a few coin draws and a door prize, I’d love to sit in on a few of their Tuesday evening meetings but the lack the free time is making it difficult to prioritize.

So, who loves Dragons? 🐉

Here’s one more silver coin(s) I picked up on the last minutes before leaving this February show, leaving me a bit hungrier for the next show on May 20th.

By then, the front garden of the Nikkei Center will also be in it’s full floral springy splendor and will be trying get some shots for a May posting.

A popular seller back in 2012 marketed to the Asian and Chinese communities that year. The largest Asian communities are located in Vancouver and Toronto.

A few rumors have that certain individuals are seeking a specific or specific Certificate of Authenticity certificate numbers, the last number of 58,888 which may also include 188,888, 288,888, 388,888 and to a lesser desirability 488,888 because the number 4 is phonetically similar to the word for death. While the number 8 has always been the Asian Lucky number.

Numista recorded that the mintage of the Proof version as 51,128 pieces.I have yet to find the source media release confirming that final figure as inclusive to the 588,888.

My take on this coin issue

The original Issue price is $40 CAD back in it's 2012 release for this half ounce silver coin. And the RCM seems a little late getting on the growing Asian themed coins compared to other mints.
The quality seems equal to typical bullion coin strikes no matter how its marketed. In the 10 years since, I haven't seen the proof version yet.
588,888 is a huge number minted so I wouldn't expect such a big premium for this semi-numismatic fractional bullion coin. I did get these at a considerably reduced price if you wait long enough in the secondary market ranging from $20 - 25 CAD. Yeah, I could have done better but the dealer was an entertaining retiree.

Two will be enough, one for each of my Sons.

There is an authentic Japanese Bento store located right next to Nikkei Community center for refreshments, not your typical fare. I may write up a little Exploring post and do a little tour. I bet they have Coffee in a can.
Thanks for reading @summertooth

That sounds great! I love the strong Asian communities in BC. I can get lost in some of those stores, such cool stuff.

It's a beautiful dragon, I'm glad you got it for less than list price. Sometimes it does pay to wait!

I believe it will be worth much more soon
Silver is king 2024

Cool name!

Not as cool as mine :)

My name? I don’t use my name here
How do you know name? Oh Silver & Bitcoin you mean? Yes two of my favorite things indeed
Gold not as good though
Silver ratio will be 10-1 soon

It's a nice design.
A #silvergoldstackers member told me that the RCM makes too many coins and over priced for the market, so it's best to wait about 4-5 years for the secondary market to chop off most of the Numismatic premium, say 40%.
The strategy works well.

Thanks for the support @tbnfl4sun

They make so many dam commemoratives they don’t have any machines left to strike…..
Very nice dragon Kerris.

No doubt, 2012 seems to be a year of endless Commemorative coins, too many and every mint has their own version. Even the Rand Refinery.
Another Dragon added to the Chinese Collection Stack.
Thanks @silverd510

I hear you, Kerris L Ravenhill - @kerrislravenhill. Anyone, interested in stacking Precious Metals, should check out, a Coin Show, if the opportunity occurs. Coin Shows are usually free, and there will be many Coin Dealers competing, with each other, for Stacker's business.

There's always the element of surprise finding something you didn't plan to buy. The Dealers are great, knowledgeable, and most are retirees that enjoy the hobby as a business as well as a social aspect.
While Numismatics is the central attraction, there is definitely more bullion put out on sale than the last few shows.

Thanks @cve3

Do you know that my email address from the very beginning had 888 at the end?
That's a pretty 1/2 oz dragon!
!LADY😍🤙🌺

And, every time I see the triple 8 suffix online or an 1888 coin I will always think of my Hive/YT/IG/TW Sister.

And this is a new silver I haven't seen before... Love it!
The packaging is beautiful to like you say. Wow.. You woke my dragon Stackitis with this one, now I need to find me one 😁 lol

You sure find the most amazing gems sis and your stack is incredleble.
I get there soon... After my life time 😂 Hahahaha

Thank you for sharing and have a wonderful weekend ❤️❤️❤️
Much love

Thanks @saffisara,
588,888 of them and according to the RCM they have long sold out, there should be some in the secondary market but I really haven't seen many especially the proof version of this coin. I'll see if the Dealer I spent some time with still has some stock in the May show.
The RCM does send stock to a few dealers in Europe.
I hope you can find one.
Take Care Sis! 🐉

The dragon coin is nice. Half ounce silver are excellent for collecting !

There are so many Dragon themed coins in the market now that you could build a considerable sized collection.

Awesome that you’re helping your sons add to their future stacking of precious metals @kerrislravenhill !🤗
I did not know about 8 being a lucky number!😇
With the 2012 Year of the Dragon having a mintage of 588,888 that would be a lucky coin to find!😇
Have a great Sunday my friend!

I recall a Chinese driven Red with gold trim Mercedes Benz with his license plate with three 8s.
Local Realtors say Chinese clients like addresses with the number 8 and typically 8th floor of Condo rises.
My Richmond coin shop located not far from a Chinese district, I noticed a lack of 1888 Dated silver coins.
Yes, Chinese like the number 8.
BTW, The numbers are on the COA but not stamped on the coin.

It’s good to have it listed on this COA, but it would also be nice if they were actually on the coin themselves just added proof of minting order😇

Awesome pickups! You have a good eye! I'm going to write up a blog about a pirate coin I want but haven't been able to afford yet later today. Keep on stacking that silver!
!LUV

Authentic 1700s Spanish 8 Reales are tough and expensive to come by in decent condition and I find replica/fantasy pirate coin made with fine silver are just as fun to have without the Numismatic price tag.

On the other hand Canadian Chinese themed coins is my side journey exploring the Asian side of my family tree.

Nah never 🙃

I just told my son not to fly his Phantom drone around for now, seems like everyone is taking credit fighting off an invasion.

I do like dragons, that's a nice find - I like when they do the black and silver contrast on the coins, it really pops. I found a couple upcoming coin shows in Edmonton and Calgary this year, but I'll have to plan on making out to a Vancouver one some time.

I hope that the North Shore Numismatic society can get the big Canada wide RCNA Royal Canadian Numismatic Society convention here in Vancouver one day, they had it here before and its something worth planning for.

Thanks for coming aboard @mraggaj

You have created a Precious Gem!

The dragon coins is beautiful and precious, I would love have one one day.

Being a half ounce size it may be more affordable than getting the full ounce size various versions from most other mints. For a mintage of 588,888 I should be seeing more of these around coin stores and auction sites.
