My Two Weeks on CubDeFi, Learning, Gainz and Losses

in LeoFinance4 years ago (edited)

pretty hard. It's been a pretty wild ride for me to say the least. After having lost my 12 or so airdropped CUB in transferring from HE to the BSC, @edicted gave me a then-value of $200 of CUB, which was near $6. After staking that somewhere, I think it was the CUB den, and seeing the APR and ROI per day, I went in

Buckle Up

Soon after a week had passed, and I had put in everything I had that wasn't BTC into one or more farms. It was a significant amount. And this was before CUB reached it's bottom of $2. I was a bit hasty thinking things could shift at anytime, thinking it would moon soon. But CUB just kept sliding down.

After it got to $2, I thought it would go sideways or keep doing down. But the dumpers had exhausted their supply to reach that point. CUB soon shot up and has since kept going up for the past week. I wanted to buy in at the $2 bottom, but I had no other alts I could spend to get he cheap CUB. I should have been patient and waited. Oh well, I got to earn some CUB during that time.

The spike upwards was a shocker. I thought it would go sideways for a while when it reached back up to $3. But that didn't last long. It lasted 3 days. Why did I want that? I was in the CUB farms. As CUB went up, it was being sold off. Who wants their CUB to be sold off? No one :D

Losses

In that past week, the CUB I had gained on the way down, along with the CUB I had bought to get into farms, was being sold off. In the past week I lost more than 1/4 of the CUB to the Impermanent Loss (IL) of the farms that can't handle such quick gains in CUB value. My USD value has gone up though. In terms of USD I'm in the green. But I have no doubt lost CUB on the sustained upswing.

But it would have been nice to be in the CUB Den starting at the $2 point. I wouldn't have lost the more than 1/4 of CUB I had, but I would also not have gained as much earnings in APRas an afterthought. Having more CUB in total is better than just earning more APR in a farm. Though the lost CUB doesn't match the gains from farming. Lesson learned.

Being Wrong a Lot

I actually thought CUB was going to be mooning near $3. But I was wrong. Then at $2 I thought the dumpers were going to continue. But I was wrong. They ran out of gas.

Hindsight is 20/20 after all. What I could have and should have done. Things could have turned out much better. But it's not that they turned out bad due to the mooning of CUB. It's just that if CUB hadn't have mooned so quick, I would have more CUB and that's what I wanted. The USD value at this point is good, but I was in it for the long haul and could have waited weeks or months to reach this CUB price.

Today I moved around 2 different times instead of just once. CUB is just booming. What a ride. I started off on a roller coaster with the price going down while strapped in a rocket APR farm. But on the way up it was the opposite. CUB was the rocket, and the APR was the roller coaster I suppose. I didn't shift gears and I paid the price as a result.

USD Gainz

Overall, I have gained 40% on the USD value I have put in at various times. In terms of CUB, I'm not exactly sure. But if I had went into the den at $2, I think I would have not lost the 1/4 extra CUB I had.

I was waiting in the BUSD Farm. Waiting to see if CUB would slow down, or go sideways. But that rocket is too powerful so far. Maybe it's going to slow down soon, maybe not.

BUSD Farm

The BUSD farm was near 598% at some point after I left earlier today. It's near 588% now. It doesn't seem like many people are attracted to it. The farm is like cancer with CUB doing so well :D

The movement on CUB price is just too quick. The IL is strong there. If things calm down I might go back into the BUSD farm. But maybe not. Things move way too fast right now. Be cautious, more than me ;)

It's going to be a hell of a wild ride this year. Mega bull year. Strap in everyone, the rollercoaster rocket is taking off. No matter how much I want CUB to slow down, it doesn't seem like it's going to. Up, up and away!

This is the bit that's worth remembering about Impermanent Loss. it all depends on your perspective whether it's a loss or not.

Thanks for the article. It's a great explanation of the pros and cons of farming. So much easier to understand when it's a real life example.

You're welcome. Yeah, I value CUB more for long term, USD is a quick measure, but I lost quite a bit of CUB by not getting out of the farm earlier. The APT didn't make it up hehe.

Yeah, I thought I was clever picking up some CUB at $1.90ish and then I chucked it into the BUSD farm and have since lost around a quarter of it too... Lol.

Lessons being learnt (fast)... 🤔

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Yeah I didn't learn it that fast. I was not expecting the moon so quick and hard :D

TBH I don't worry too much about impermanent loss - I tend to just compound what I've already got in the CUB den, and then I just cycle the following:

  • swap everything I harvest for DAI/ BUSD and pool that
  • don't swap anything and put all the CUB in the den.

Besides that I don't really think about it!

I've stopped putting into that BUSD-CUB pool too.

Well that pool is the worst farm there is right now to be in. CUB is moving too quick and strong. It's good you're not in it.

You're farm has two stable coins, to you aren't going to get much IL at all, ever. Nothing to worry about there.

Lesson learned, you learn from mistakes. At least you know much better how the platform works and the token in general.

Yup, hopefully I make better moves in the future ;)

I didn't understand Cub. I put it in my wallet because somebody told me there was a limit of time to take it from Hive Engine. But I don't know what to do with it now.

What wallet did you put it into? Metamask? Go to the docs section and pick a tutorial to start and learn. For example: https://docs.cubdefi.com/tutorials/how-to-download-and-setup-metamask

Good luck.

Thats because USD value its a common measuring stick to compare things to. I was up in USD, but the losses were greater in CUB. CUB? How you measure that?

Those Kors were probably already in the high hundreds before the spike. I know hive uses measure of past 7 days average for post value as well, to balance it out.

As for Steem, fuck steem. They got nothing going on in dev, unless I'm wrong. It's all K hype.

@xiko the post on steem that do well is because of vote buying and trading that we highly discourage here, it's not organic and notice anyone that posts legitimately doesn't do very well on steem compared to hive, it's more balanced within the community as a whole not just the same 10 users everyday for a year so you don't have the$700-$1000 posts on hive like over there.

Hive is far from perfect but much better than what it was and certainly better than the old platform. As far as the blind curation trail voting, if the larger holders didn't do that, they would vote the same 10 people they read everyday to much higher than now since they can probably just drop $100 vote one each of them and be done with it so and nobody can read 100 blogs a day. That way the distribution is spread out better all over the platform not just the same 10 all the time.

If you are not happy with the content and want something more intellectual , how about write something more intellectual and encourage others to follow suit or otherwise it's just whining, you have the power to shape things however you like around here by being an influencer. The whole idea is social media where people post their own content. You may not be a fan of it but it's not copy paste from the internet and their own stories so it's a win.

Sure sometimes the trending page can feel like an echo chamber with things always around the corner, well it sounds better than we are bleeding users left right and center and it's a good morale boost for the community. Things are actually getting better as far as users if you look at activity charts, we are slowly on the way up.

There has been a lot of development securing the chain itself and optimizing speeds and lowering costs where most of us will not see these upgrades but they were necessary because when we had 100k+ daily active users it got all bogged up. That has to be done before opening the gate to many new users or it makes it unusable for everyone, quite important actually. Now that's pretty much complete, they can more to developing more on the front ends and apps to make it more fun ad attract users, some projects are getting near complete. The Leo front end is working and I saw an thing about the travel community looking to hire devs so obviously something on that front is in the works there too. I'm sure there are more. Nobody is deluded, we know we are far from mainstream adoption but doesn't mean this place is crap, it's just barely built yet give it time. If people don't share their works on other social media and there is no advertising, hard to attract people.

It used to be free to post comment and whatever else but because there is tokens/money involved abusers ruined that by posting excessive spam and comment farming just to cash it out immediately, it affected the chain's performance and ruined that for everyone else starting out. Trust me it was pretty bad so they had to implement the rc system to limit the abuse. There has been a lot of learn as you go for everyone involved. I see you didn't do your introduction post to the community and that is normally how new users get enough rc to post a little more or get a delegation. They are working on a rc pool delegation of some type in the near future to mitigate that.

There was also a reward curve update to counteract that excessive spamming and made it hard for us medium holders to reward good comments on the chain as smaller votes are currently worth less rather than pooled with other votes so comment farming and spam didn't thrive, but it had repercussions on newer users/content consumers unable to earn from commenting alone but that will be reverted back on the upcoming HF25, it's being tested now in the background before release.

Keep in mind, on a technicality this place just celebrated it's first birthday just a few weeks ago, it isn't even built yet. Unfortunately if you are not here to build then you are at the mercy of waiting for features like the rest of us. The old chain was under a corporation so there was no choice in development and features or the speed of any of this went, that held back a lot of things. Since we gained our independence in the last year, things have been moving a bit faster and more freely, just be patient ,this place is a work in progress. You fix one problem and it creates another and it can seem like a game of whack-a-mole trying to tweak things just right.

I don't use 3 speak so I don't know or keep up with what goes on there.

"I prefer to consume it rather then be part of that 'worker bee' group" - That is your choice. If you don't want to do long form content than have you tried DBuzz?

I'm not missing any point. I know what this place is or isn't, I was here when it was the old chain for almost 4 years now. These guys don't use mainstream social media and hate it so they are a bit delusional on what the mainstream user want and refuse to understand it and that affects their perception of this place. I get it... I am a mainstream user. Their loss and why they are banging their head against the wall trying to gain and retain users here and unable to see the problem. They have their vision and that's the only one that matters to them, in the end...their loss since they have more at stake than the rest of us (investment/token value) and yes it does limit this place but it doesn't make it un-usable. Maybe you should pay less attention to their echo chamber if it bothers you that much and just do your thing like the rest of us.

The advantage of web 3.0, they can't remove you from society and delete your account for what you post like they do on FB and twitter and instead of a central entity earning on engagement and owning the platform or selling your data. It is every user with their stake instead. The point you are missing is stake=voice , earned or bought. You seem to want specific demands right now but not willing to put in any work or gain the respect of the community.

A user doesn't have to leave their other platform just because they did but can enhance their overall social media experiences by bringing their content created here to friends. For example, I'm into photography and travel and that's what I mainly write about and bring it to my friends on my mainstream media, anyone can easily use both rather than pick one or the other, it's all what you make of it in the end. They don't want a billion mainstream users here it creates too much chaos, mostly content creators at least for now. This place cannot handle that many users why the RC implementation in the first place.
