From a purely capitalistic point of view, you are right. There's a moderate uptick in spending around the holidays in general, mostly in December. But from an individual's view, this is more than spending money for the sake of simply spending money or cladding yourself with the latest gizmos. This is a time of bonding for the family, and gifting is the best way to achieve that bond, especially for the kiddos. Besides, no one person in a family is gonna whip a grand out of their pocket, it's USUALLY a shared expense between the older siblings and parents. Whatever it is, it's worth it for family.

Living below your means is the only sentiment I'm gonna hue out of this post. But applying this sentiment 24/7/364 is nigh impossible, and anyone doing that is gonna go mental. Break that sentiment for a change, treat yourself to some fun.
