ever been curious about multi-sig wallets and if you should use one? you should at the very least experience this. vultisig makes multi-sig stupid easy. i wrote a guide on it, so if you're interested, check the comments.
Nice, I work with them, announcing something this coming week.
Unfortunately I can't use it because they only have the multi-device vaults available, and I have an Android phone and two Linux computers, so I'm shut out for now.
I actually just got it running on Linux. You can install the .deb file from the Windows release, then on terminal do "vultisig start". It will give you an error of a missing dependency, install that, then go "sudo vultisig start" and it runs.
Would have been great to read some arguments by blocktrades or anyone who doesn't support Inleo's proposal. Haven't come across any such post but would be interested 🙂
TLDR; the hive DHF is now fully centralized. If you want to be funded, you need 35M in community votes AND Blocktrades’ personal 26M vote
If you have the community support, but not Blocktrades, you won’t get any funding
Only 3 projects currently have over 35M in community support: INLEO, Keychain and Ecency
INLEO and Keychain have the community’s backing but not Blocktrades, so we are not funded.
Ecency has both the community and Blocktrades, so they are funded.
I am not speaking out too much about this as I think it needs to come from the community - since I clearly have a horse in this race.
Having 1 person control the DHF is an existential risk to Hive. I think the Hive community should band together and petition Blocktrades to fully abstain from governance voting. As someone who maintains the core chain activities + owns 26M HP, it’s a centralization risk.
This can’t come from me, it must come from the community
Yes the first thing that occurred to me was a dictator situation. Honestly I never knew what blocktrades was. I had just read the name in passing. I was psyched we were pushing forward with funding now I'm not psyched.
I didn't realize he was Blocktrades. I hope he realizes that we should be funded. I've been here since the fork and never heard of ecency either lol. I don't see a future for hive without InLeo
Well, this certainly seems like an invitation to examine the mechanics of witness voting. For starters, maybe witness proxies could only apply to witness voting, not to Proposal voting. Then there's capping the weight of votes...
We must remain stoic my friend... Don't let "bad things" happening to you define your day, your mood, be grateful they happen so that things can be improved.
I applaud the stoic approach to things lol Takes a lot more self control than I have LOL
But you are right, I'm kind of clocked out of Hive, so really dont have a dog in the fight anymore. Nothing I do, will or will not help or hinder things so....Keep on keeping on!
the timing was a dick move. Also I don’t like so much of the chain being controlled by one person. I do think most projects need to treat DHF support as a temporary thing
valid point, but such is the nature of the free market. I see a lot of people upset that few accounts control the resources of our blockchain, but some of these accounts hold a tiny fraction of their earnings still in the wallets.
the more centralized things get the less free the market will be. This push and pull seems to be the basis for most political disagreements. I don’t have an answer but it sure would be nice if we could figure out how to discourage (not disallow) people from trying to own more than 1%. Not sure it’s possible when we have multiple accounts and I don’t think we should sacrifice that either.
Best we can do is create a good culture that values decentralization.
Hence why all ideologies are Horseshoes, yet the people defending them always seem to forget this fact. That being said, there is no such thing as a perfect system either. All we can do is attempt to modify the set of incentives to move the needle in the desirable direction.
I should also say that I'm confident Blocktrades knows the if he was to turn tyrannical, he would effectively be destroying his own investment. Even if he is wrong here, and he could be, I'm sure he believes he's doing the right thing.
Yep, that's why I don't really put any stake here anymore. Everey proof of stake chain I have worked with, either has a user, or as a validator has seen these kind of issues, if not worse. That's why I am building a proof of work farm with what I can earn from here, lol.
I am slowly getting used to a mobile wallet but I still feel like I have a better grip on things on the computer with several tabs open for payments. But I do like some google pay features on the go.
yeah I’d love to bring some younger people onboard. I think the issue is that a lot of influential hivesters are people in the late 30s and older. Not all of course. Once we start our shop I think we can onboard some people in their 20’s.
This is my take on the Hive governance situation. The solution is obvious but since I have a horse in this race, I invite you to consider this solution and pose it to your fellow Hivers:
Realizing I was missing on the proposals drama, interesting development in Hive politics, I guess all projects are on the same playing fields now. Looking forward to see if some will end up with funding and not others.
Anyone have insight into why @Blocktrades defunded almost all #DHF proposals? Even the HBD stabilizer and Core development are unfunded ATM. I see no public comment.
Well, that seems to be the biggest drain on the DHF by far. I'm sure other proposals factor into it, but all of them put together don't hold a candle to what that one is draining from the DHF, so what else would it be?
Word. Always swapping on-chain but doing a little leverage trading on exchanges once in a while. Those occasional Korean pumps are difficult to catch but can be shorted on a way down.
Here's a little pre-view about me, as I'm planning to write a little more on #hive and #inleo. Probably going to be in the #lifestyle section, but who knows, maybe you have other suggestions? Post is in the comments :-)
Yeah, that's the idea - I'm just exploring platforms. The more I dive in, the more confusing it actually gets. There are so many of them, all with their own weird tokens and so on. Inleo seems a lot like twitter, but until now, peakD is the user-friendliest to me :-D
Daily Hive users counter: As per 16.02.202514.02.2025 reached 2,556,999 (+219)! Top onboarders:, the number of accounts created on the #hive #blockchain since @leo.voter 135, @appreciator 22, @dbuzz 13
Pakistan is hosting a big sport event few days later. Being a Cricketer, I'm feeling an honour to be a part of Pakistani Nation who is hosting ICC Champion Trophy. In its respect and advertisment, I'm generating a Cricket
Meme Edition.
At 19th February, there will be rain of six and fours in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi Cricket Stadiums. It will be fun to see the war between Bowlers and Batsman. I hope, Champion Trophy will be wonderful.

“We are primarily focusing on utilizing the large investments in terrestrial solar for space, which has tremendous value for space,” said Peter Toth chief executive officer and co-founder of Extraterrestrial Power.
“Importantly, we are only utilizing technologies that allow high throughput manufacturing, which enables satellites being manufactured in high volumes necessary for low earth orbit (LEO) constellations,” he added.
The company first demonstrated its solar cells on Caltech’s space-based solar power experiment in 2023. This experiment made history by wirelessly transmitting power in space and beaming it to Earth for the first time.
That was shortly followed in 2024 when the cells took a ride-share on Waratah Seed. The New South Wales government supported this mission with various cutting-edge technologies on board.
Making solar cells in space
“Since thin solar cells use less materials, but we still need to maintain high efficiencies, they will have applications on Earth for lightweight usage initially—and wider uses later,” Toth explained.
Next-gen smart cars with advanced AI capabilities
Recently, the Chinese EV maker made headlines by partnering with artificial intelligence company DeepSeek to integrate its R1 LLM model with the next generation of smart cars.
The automaker will now conduct distillation training on its Xingrui car control FunctionCall AI model using DeepSeek’s R1, enhancing the smaller model’s performance by leveraging outputs from a more advanced AI system.
More hands mean more work and more increase. If your heart within you desires wealth, do these things and work with work upon work.
[405] First of all, get a house, and a woman and an ox for the plow—a slave woman and not a wife, to follow the oxen as well—and make everything ready at home, so that you may not have to ask of another, and he refuse you, and so, because you are in lack, the season pass by and your work come to nothing.
Then remember to hew your timber: it is the season for that work. Cut a mortar three feet wide and a pestle three cubits long, and an axle of seven feet, for it will do very well so; [425] but if you make it eight feet long, you can cut a beetle from it as well. Cut a felloe (wagon wheel) three spans across for a wagon of ten palms' width.
Still, tech bosses largely agreed that even though DeepSeek's breakthrough shows China being further along in the global AI race than previously thought, the threat it poses to OpenAI remains limited for now.
'The game is on'
DeepSeek says that its new R1 model, an open-source reasoning model, was able to rival the performance of OpenAI's own similar o1 model — only using a cheaper, less energy-intensive process.
"The competition is afoot with China," Hoffman said, adding that DeepSeek's R1 is "a credible, actionable model."
Abishur Prakash, founder of strategic advisory firm The Geopolitical Business, told CNBC that DeepSeek shows the West's understanding of China remains limited.
A report from semiconductor research firm SemiAnalysis last month estimated that DeepSeek's hardware expenditure is "well higher" than $500 million over the company's history. DeepSeek was not immediately available for comment when contacted by CNBC.
The report found that DeepSeek's research and development costs and expenses related to ownership are significant and that generating "synthetic data" for the model to train on would require "considerable amount of compute."
Some technologists believe that DeepSeek may have been able to achieve such a high level of performance by training its models on larger U.S. AI systems.
This technique, known as "distillation," involves having more powerful AI models evaluate the quality of answers being generated by a newer model.
It's a claim that OpenAI itself has alluded to, telling CNBC in a statement last month that it's reviewing reports that DeepSeek may have "inappropriately" used output data from its models to develop its AI model, a method referred to as "distillation."
'Life-Threatening Cold' Polar Vortex Dips Into US
After winter storms pummeled the eastern U.S. over the weekend, harsh weather moved west Monday as a polar vortex was expected to grip the Rockies and the northern plains.
Harsh weather moved west Monday as a polar vortex was expected to grip the Rockies and the northern Plains after winter storms pummeled the eastern U.S. over the weekend, killing at least 10 people, including nine victims in Kentucky who died during flooding from heavy rains.
The National Weather Service warned of "life-threatening cold" into Tuesday, with temperatures in northeastern Montana predicted to dip as low as 45 degrees below zero (-42.7 degrees Celsius) with wind chills down to 60 below (-51 degrees Celsius).
"The effects will continue for awhile, a lot of swollen streams and a lot of flooding going on," Oravec said Sunday.
In Alabama, the weather service in Birmingham said it had confirmed an EF-1 tornado touched down in Hale County. Storms there and elsewhere in the state destroyed or damaged a handful of mobile homes, downed trees and toppled power lines, but no injuries were immediately reported.
A state of emergency was declared for parts of Obion County, Tennessee, after a levee failed on Saturday, flooding the small community of Rives, home to around 300 people in the western part of the state. "There will be mandatory evacuations in effect for the residents in Rives due to the rising water, no electricity, and freezing temperatures creating a life-threatening situation," Mayor Steve Carr said in a statement Sunday.
The Bronze Age in Europe began in 3000 B.C. and gave way to the Iron Age circa 1100 B.C. While the overlap of these ages occurred at different times in different places, Greece was true to the 1100 B.C. date as it began the transition to iron manufacturing and the replacement of bronze.
In Atlanta, a person was killed when a large tree fell on a home early Sunday, according to Atlanta Fire Rescue Capt. Scott Powell.
Dangerously cold wind chill temperatures as low as 50 degrees below zero (minus 45.6) were expected in most of North Dakota, which remained under an "extreme cold warning" along with large swaths of South Dakota and Minnesota, according to the weather service.
Water submerged cars and buildings in Kentucky and mudslides blocked roads in Virginia over the weekend. Flood warnings extended throughout Tennessee and Arkansas.
We begin our study by examining the technical details of iron making because they shed light on how iron processing developed and paved the way for the practical use of the metal. Although the first iron used by man came from meteorites, wrought iron was the first class of iron manufactured, perhaps as early as the second millennium B.C. Wrought iron proved inadequate for general use because slag embedded in the metal prevented it from being sufficiently hardened.
To produce high quality iron, the blacksmiths of antiquity had to learn carburization (getting carbon into the iron), quenching, and tempering (strengthening through hammering). Their experience with bronze was no help because bronze production is very different and only requires hammering. The ancient smiths could produce fires that were hot enough, but it was not until they started using charcoal that they noticed carbon being taken into the metal. Quenching and tempering is a more complicated process because you have to know when the metal is ready to hammer and when to apply heat a second time.
The mother and child were swept away Saturday night in Kentucky’s Bonnieville community, Hart County Coroner Tony Roberts said. In southeastern Kentucky, a 73-year-old man was found dead in floodwaters in Clay County, county Emergency Management Deputy Director Revelle Berry said. There were a total of four deaths in Hart County, Beshear said.
The Kentucky River Medical Center in the city of Jackson said it had closed its emergency department and transferred all patients to two other hospitals in the region due to a nearby river flooding.
High winds brought down trees and power poles across Albermarle County, Virginia. The Charlottesville Police Department said Sunday on social media that officers’ response times could be delayed due to "an overwhelming number of weather-related calls for service." Police urged residents to stay off the roads.
Once the Greeks discovered carburization, they were able to produce thin carburized products (swords). For thicker uses (axes), they had to layer together a series of thin pieces of iron to overcome the problem of getting carbon into thick pieces of the metal.
Quenching is mentioned in the Odyssey, so much of the iron manufacturing technique had evolved by the time of Homer, but the timeline of the development of the full process remains obscure. Using iron artifacts for dating is difficult because the climate of the Greek Peninsula corrodes most examples beyond identification.
There is evidence of Minoan and Mycenaean iron working, but only at the tail end of the Mycenaean efforts do we see a link to what the Greeks would accomplish later. Examples of these early efforts are knives that have their handles attached with bronze rivets. Unfortunately, the sub-Mycenaean period yields little in the way of iron objects.
Power outages were reported along much of the eastern seaboard, from New York south to Georgia.
In West Virginia, 13 southern counties were under a state of emergency for flooding and some areas were cut off to vehicle traffic Sunday. Several volunteer fire departments dealt with flooding in their own buildings while answering rescue and evacuation calls.
Ice and snow made road travel treacherous in large swaths of Michigan, which remained under a winter weather advisory until Monday afternoon. Michigan State Police reported 114 crashes Sunday around the Detroit area since snow started falling Saturday.
It’s is not until the beginning of the Proto-geometric Period that we begin to see significant iron in Attica. These objects date from the middle of the eleventh century.
During the early, middle, and late Geometric periods (ending in 700 B.C.) we see a combination or iron and bronze metalwork in graves. Iron dominates as the metal of weaponry. The reason for this is that iron is 12% lighter than bronze and able to hold its sharpness longer, making it the metal of choice for swords and spears.
Also in Colorado, three state patrol cruisers that had pulled over along roadsides were struck by other vehicles, including one on Sunday where a trooper had stopped as officials prepared to close a road because of ice. In each case the troopers were out of their cruisers at the time and were uninjured.
Avalanche warnings were issued for numerous areas of the Rocky Mountains stretching from Colorado to Washington state, with the danger rated highest in Utah.
Measuring the hardness of ancient objects tells us about the quality of the technique and the relative value of the materials. Copper has a Brinell (hardness) value of 35. Mix it with 10% tin produces a bronze alloy with a hardness of 88. Wrought iron is about 100 and modern steel is 100-150 before forging and 246 after. If you hammer the bronze alloy you can drive the hardness to 228, proving that bronze was adequate in hardness when compared to iron. Two Egyptian iron knives have been discovered, air dried and not quenched, with a hardness of 302 – a stunning example of craftsmanship.
The new Model Spec doesn’t mean that ChatGPT is a total free-for-all now. The chatbot will still refuse to answer certain objectionable questions or respond in a way that supports blatant falsehoods.
These changes could be seen as a response to conservative criticism about ChatGPT’s safeguards, which have always seemed to skew center-left. However, an OpenAI spokesperson rejects the idea that it was making changes to appease the Trump administration.
In the end, there were two main difficulties with transitioning completely from bronze to iron in Greece. In the first place the process of making iron products continued to be very technical and the number of smiths with mastery over it were relatively small. Secondly, many items made of bronze were cast in molds – a process that could not be performed in iron until centuries later. The iron making skill varied by geography and some locations were decades behind others in developing the craft, probably due to the lack of skilled smiths.
Nevertheless, OpenAI now says it’s doubling down on free speech. This week, the company even removed warnings from ChatGPT that tell users when they’ve violated its policies. OpenAI told TechCrunch this was purely a cosmetic change, with no change to the model’s outputs.
The company seems to want ChatGPT to feel less censored for users.
It wouldn’t be surprising if OpenAI was also trying to impress the new Trump administration with this policy update, notes former OpenAI policy leader Miles Brundage in a post on X.
The Greeks of antiquity were remarkable not only for being the first great thinkers, but also for the depth of their thinking. In the cruel world of antiquity where living itself was a struggle, they contemplated the unity of man and his relationship with others of his species. This manner of deep thinking is vividly demonstrated in Platos’ dialogs, specifically in The Protagoras.
Plato, in the Protagoras, uses the famous sophist of that name to explain how man was given the skills he needed to survive in the world. One of them, virtue, must be taught because it does not come easily to human beings.
Trump has previously targeted Silicon Valley companies, such as Twitter and Meta, for having active content moderation teams that tend to shut out conservative voices.
OpenAI may be trying to get out in front of that. But there’s also a larger shift going on in Silicon Valley and the AI world about the role of content moderation.
Schulman isn’t alone. “I think OpenAI is right to push in the direction of more speech,” said Dean Ball, a research fellow at George Mason University’s Mercatus Center, in an interview with TechCrunch. “As AI models become smarter and more vital to the way people learn about the world, these decisions just become more important.”
In previous years, AI model providers have tried to stop their AI chatbots from answering questions that might lead to “unsafe” answers. Almost every AI company stopped their AI chatbot from answering questions about the 2024 election for U.S. president. This was widely considered a safe and responsible decision at the time.
Thus did Epimetheus, who, not being very wise, forgot that he had distributed among the brute animals all the qualities which he had to give-and when he came to man, who was still unprovided, he was terribly perplexed. Now while he was in this perplexity, Prometheus came to inspect the distribution, and he found that the other animals were suitably furnished, but that man alone was naked and shoeless, and had neither bed nor arms of defense.
The appointed hour was approaching when man in his turn was to go forth into the light of day; and Prometheus, not knowing how he could devise his salvation, stole the mechanical arts of Hephaestus and Athena, and fire with them and gave them to man. Thus man had the wisdom necessary to the support of life, but political wisdom he had not…
Last week, Mistral used the AI Action Summit to demonstrate that it’s getting serious about business. While the company has already raised large amounts of money from international investors, many of its foreign backers are based in the U.S. — investors such as Lightspeed Venture Partners, Andreessen Horowitz and Salesforce Ventures.
Due to the shifting geopolitical landscape, Mistral could potentially welcome Middle Eastern investors in its upcoming funding round. It would be a way to raise more money to remain relevant in the AI race on a technical level, while positioning itself as the international alternative to U.S. and Chinese AI companies. Mistral’s newest model, Saba, could therefore contribute to that potential fundraising effort.
Now man, having a share of the divine attributes, was at first the only one of the animals who had any gods, because he alone was of their kindred; and he would raise altars and images of them. He was not long in inventing articulate speech and names; and he also constructed houses and clothes and shoes and beds, and drew sustenance from the earth. Thus provided, mankind at first lived dispersed, and there were no cities.
Mistral Saba is accessible through Mistral’s API. It can also be deployed on-premise, which could be a strong selling point for companies working in sensitive industries, such as energy, finance or healthcare.
Due to the company’s European roots, since the release of the original open-weight Mistral 7B model it has often reiterated that it takes multi-language support seriously. Saba’s release is a continuation of that positioning. And Mistral said that it will be turning its attention to other regional languages down the road.
But the consequence was that they were destroyed by the wild beasts, for they were utterly weak in comparison of them, and their art was only sufficient to provide them with the means of life, and did not enable them to carry on war against the animals: food they had, but not as yet the art of government, of which the art of war is a part. After a while the desire of self-preservation gathered them into cities; but when they were gathered together, having no art of government, they evil entreated one another, and were again in process of dispersion and destruction.
California-based Olyn — founded by Ana Maria Jipa, Jeremias Buireo, Kiran Thomas, and Malcolm Wood — allows filmmakers to retain up to 90% of their revenue while giving audiences access to a streaming experience. Instead of films being sold to platforms like Netflix, the model hinges on the marketing budget of the filmmakers themselves, combined with influencers, film critics, and content creators acting as distribution partners by embedding purchase links within their content, blogs, and social channels.
This peer-to-peer approach does away with the platform as a middleman and turns movie distribution into more of an e-commerce-style engagement.
Perry Trevers, a producer at Studio POW, which used Olyn to distribute “Midas Man,” sees the platform as a helpful step in the right direction. “Olyn has enabled us to think beyond traditional platforms, letting us become our own streaming service […] It’s about empowering filmmakers to market and distribute films in a way that mirrors the direct-to-consumer success of e-commerce […] It’s a chance to retain control over our work and redefine how movies reach their viewers,” he said in a statement.
And this is the reason, Socrates, why the Athenians and mankind in general, when the question relates to carpentering or any other mechanical art, allow but a few to share in their deliberations; and when anyone else interferes, then, as you say, they object, if he be not of the favored few; which, as I reply, is very natural. But when they meet to deliberate about political virtue, which proceeds only by way of justice and wisdom, they are patient enough of any man who speaks of them, as is also natural, because they think that every man ought to share in this sort of virtue, and that states could not exist if this were otherwise…
And that you may not suppose yourself to be deceived in thinking that all men regard every man as having a share of justice or honesty and of every other political virtue, let me give you a further proof, which is this. In other cases, as you are aware, if a man says that he is a good flute-player, or skilful in any other art in which he has no skill, people either laugh at him or are angry with him, and his relations think that he is mad and go and admonish him; but when honesty is in question, or some other political virtue, even if they know that he is dishonest,
yet, if the man comes publicly forward and tells the truth about his dishonesty, then, what in the other case was held by them to be good sense, they now deem to be madness. They say that all men ought to profess honesty whether they are honest or not, and that a man is out of his mind who says anything else. Their notion is, that a man must have some degree of honesty; and that if he has none at all he ought not to be in the world.”
“Independent filmmakers have already taken the financial risk to produce their movies themselves. Studio POW is self-financed. They created the “Midas Man” movie. They have the freedom to be able to sell those rights to whoever they want. They did a deal in the U.K. market with Amazon, but they felt that it was more profitable to go direct to their audience in the U.S. market using Olyn as a tool,” he said.
Wood feels Olyn can be best thought of as “Shopify for filmmakers with a referral link.”
A man should be removed from society if he admits he is not virtuous, because virtue is a requirement for men to live together.
Protagoras is saying that society contains some men who have no potentiality for virtue and, therefore, have no place in society. The great majority, however, have the ability to learn justice and respect for others if they are willing to be taught. We do not ridicule men who are deformed because they cannot help their condition, but men with vices are admonished when they operate contrary to civic virtue. Men are punished not because of the crime they committed but to prevent the next crime --punishment teaches virtue.
He noted the average film on Amazon in the U.K. gets only around 2,000 views per year. “So there’s a bunch of films that are getting millions of views, but the majority of films fall below the 2,000 view mark,” he added.
Major streaming services typically offer a lump-sum licensing deal, meaning filmmakers receive a one-time payment regardless of how many times their film is watched. Olyn flips this model on its head by allowing filmmakers to monetize directly based on viewership.
“But in the long term, we aim to create a space where filmmakers, not the platform, decide what gets distributed,” she added. “We don’t want to act as gatekeepers. Our vision is to allow filmmakers to have full control over what they distribute, eventually moving to a full SaaS model.”
Olyn has so far raised only a small amount of funding — a total of $2.8 million — in a combination of $1.8 million from U.S. VC firm Hard Yaka and a number of angel investors.
South Korea is not the only country being cautious with DeepSeek given its Chinese origins. Australia has prohibited the use of DeepSeek on government devices out of security concerns. The Garante, Italy’s data protection authority, has instructed DeepSeek to block its chatbot in the country, while Taiwan has banned government departments from using DeepSeek AI.
Hangzhou city-based DeepSeek was founded by Liang Feng in 2023, and it released DeepSeek R1, a free, open-source reasoning AI model that competes with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
How Cleisthenes Saved the Athenian Polis
The Athenian Polis traveled a crooked road in the hundred years before true democracy was achieved under Cleisthenes. The story and the dynamics at work in Athens during the sixth century B.C. are the subject of this article.
Prior to the reforms of Solon, the Athenian political system was controlled by a group of aristocratic families – the Eupatridai or “well born ones”. Notice that “patri” (father) serves as the root of this word like it does in the Roman word patrician. In both cases we see a government managed by a group of families claiming legitimacy through longevity – a kind of original authority.
But the sheer number of disparate participating parties, spanning academia, research, and corporations, have led many to question whether its goals are achievable. Anastasia Stasenko, co-founder of LLM company Pleias, questioned whether a “sprawling consortia of 20+ organizations” could have the same measured focus of a homegrown private AI firm.
“Europe’s recent successes in AI shine through small focused teams like Mistral AI and LightOn — companies that truly own what they’re building,” Stasenko wrote. “They carry immediate responsibility for their choices, whether in finances, market positioning, or reputation.”
The OpenEuroLLM project is either starting from scratch or it has a head start — depending on how you look at it.
Since 2022, Hajič has also been coordinating the High Performance Language Technologies (HPLT) project, which has set out to develop free and reusable datasets, models, and workflows using high-performance computing (HPC). That project is scheduled to end in late 2025, but it can be viewed as a sort of “predecessor” to OpenEuroLLM, according to Hajič, given that most of the partners on HPLT (aside from the U.K. partners) are participating here, too.
The senior magistrates of Athens, the Archons, as members of the Eupatridai, controlled the machinery of government. After a year in office each Archon joined a group of elders called the Areopagos, which, among its several powers, controlled Athenian citizenship by determining who qualified to be members of the Phratries or kinship groups. Another source of power, held by the Eupatridai, was control over property. They managed most of the land in Attica by claiming authority over public land. The commons were hired as tenants to work this land and forced to pay one sixth of their crop value as rent.
“In that respect, we are starting from scratch — the project started on Saturday [February 1],” Hajič said. “But we have been preparing the project for a year [the tender process opened in February 2024].”
From academia and research, organizations spanning Czechia, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Finland, and Norway are part of the OpenEuroLLM cohort, in addition to the EuroHPC centers. From the corporate world, Finland’s AMD-owned AI lab Silo AI is on board, as are Aleph Alpha (Germany), Ellamind (Germany), Prompsit Language Engineering (Spain), and LightOn (France).
These issues of governmental power and land control were causing great dissatisfaction among the Athenian people at the beginning of the sixth century. The universal authority of the Eupatridai was opposed by a rising middle class (similar to the Equites of Rome) who had acquired wealth through their own hard work, but had no access to power. At the same time, tenants working the fields began to agitate for a re-distribution of land, so they could own property and take control of their lives.
Enter Solon, the lawgiver, elected Archon in 594 B.C, who decided to remedy all injustices against the common people. Solon implemented a sweeping set of new laws designed to address the concerns of the disadvantaged, but not go so far as to upset the aristocratic class. He was truly walking a tightrope.
One notable omission from the list is that of French AI unicorn Mistral, which has positioned itself as an open source alternative to incumbents such as OpenAI. While nobody from Mistral responded to TechCrunch for comment, Hajič did confirm that he tried to initiate conversations with the startup, but to no avail.
“I tried to approach them, but it hasn’t resulted in a focused discussion about their participation,” Hajič said.
The project could still gather new participants as part of the EU program that’s providing funding, though it will be limited to EU organizations. This means that entities from the U.K. and Switzerland won’t be able to take part. This flies in contrast to the Horizon R&D program, which the U.K. rejoined in 2023 after a prolonged Brexit stalemate and which provided funding to HPLT.
Build up
The project’s top-line goal, as per its tagline, is to create: “A series of foundation models for transparent AI in Europe.” Additionally, these models should preserve the “linguistic and cultural diversity” of all EU languages — current and future.
While the goal is to make the model as proficient as possible in all languages, attaining equality across the board could also be challenging.
“That is the goal, but how successful we can be with languages with scarce digital resources is the question,” Hajič said. “But that’s also why we want to have true benchmarks for these languages, and not to be swayed toward benchmarks which are perhaps not representative of the languages and the culture behind them.“
In terms of data, this is where a lot of the work from the HPLT project will prove fruitful, with version 2.0 of its dataset released four months ago. This dataset was trained 4.5 petabytes of web crawls and more than 20 billion documents, and Hajič said that they will add additional data from Common Crawl (an open repository of web-crawled data) to the mix.
The open source definition
In traditional software, the perennial struggle between open source and proprietary revolves around the “true” meaning of “open source.” This can be resolved by deferring to the formal “definition” as per the Open Source Initiative, the industry stewards of what are and aren’t legitimate open source licenses.
More recently, the OSI has formed a definition of “open source AI,” though not everyone is happy with the outcome. Open source AI proponents argue that not only models should be freely available, but also the datasets, pretrained models, weights — the full shebang. The OSI’s definition doesn’t make training data mandatory, because it says AI models are often trained on proprietary data or data with redistribution restrictions.
Suffice it to say, the OpenEuroLLM is facing these same quandaries, and despite its intentions to be “truly open,” it will probably have to make some compromises if it’s to fulfill its “quality” obligations.
“The goal is to have everything open. Now, of course, there are some limitations,” Hajič said. “We want to have models of the highest quality possible, and based on the European copyright directive we can use anything we can get our hands on. Some of it cannot be redistributed, but some of it can be stored for future inspection.”
What this means is that the OpenEuroLLM project might have to keep some of the training data under wraps, but be made available to auditors upon request — as required for high-risk AI systems under the terms of the EU AI Act.
“We hope that most of the data [will be open], especially the data coming from the Common Crawl,” Hajič said. “We would like to have it all completely open, but we will see. In any case, we will have to comply with AI regulations.”
Two for one
Another criticism that emerged in the aftermath of OpenEuroLLM’s formal unveiling was that a very similar project launched in Europe just a few short months previous. EuroLLM, which launched its first model in September and a follow-up in December, is co-funded by the EU alongside a consortium of nine partners. These include academic institutions such as the University of Edinburgh and corporations such as Unbabel, which last year won millions of GPU training hours on EU supercomputers.
Hajič called the situation “unfortunate,” adding that he hoped they might be able to cooperate, though he stressed that due to the source of its funding in the EU, OpenEuroLLM is restricted in terms of its collaborations with non-EU entities, including U.K. universities.
Funding gap
The arrival of China’s DeepSeek, and the cost-to-performance ratio it promises, has given some encouragement that AI initiatives might be able to do far more with much less than initially thought. However, over the past few weeks, many have questioned the true costs involved in building DeepSeek.
With respect to the government, Solon organized citizens into four classes by wealth. The second class, Hippeis, included those of “new money” who were now allowed to run for Archon. He provided for all citizens to participate in the Ecclesia (assembly) and the lower classes to have their own court system (Heliaia). The Heliaia had to power to elect officials and indict them for crimes against the people. Solon is also said to have created the Council of 400 as a consultative body to the Ecclesia.
Solon’s efforts in land reforms included what was labeled Seisachtheia, or shaking off of burdens. Contracts dictated by the Horoi (boundary stones) were annulled and use of a debtor’s physical body as collateral was prohibited. All citizens who had been enslaved were freed.
And this ties in with the whole “not starting from scratch” notion espoused by Hajič — there is already a bedrock of expertise and technology in place.
Sovereign state
As critics have noted, OpenEuroLLM does have a lot of moving parts — which Hajič acknowledges, albeit with a positive outlook.
“I’ve been involved in many collaborative projects, and I believe it has its advantages versus a single company,” he said. “Of course they’ve done great things at the likes of OpenAI to Mistral, but I hope that the combination of academic expertise and the companies’ focus could bring something new.”
And in many ways, it’s not about trying to outmaneuver Big Tech or billion-dollar AI startups; the ultimate goal is digital sovereignty: (mostly) open foundation LLMs built by, and for, Europe.
“I hope this won’t be the case, but if, in the end, we are not the number one model, and we have a ‘good’ model, then we will still have a model with all the components based in Europe,” Hajič said. “This will be a positive result.”
He cited two historical examples illustrating interconnected economic systems with forms of currency that were transported: Pre-Columbian Western North America used shell beads, and Western Europe employed bronze or copper ingots. Both established trade routes that crossed great distances.
In both cases, goods were traded across “numerous cultural, linguistic, and political boundaries.” He emphasizes that the chance of meeting again was uncertain, reducing the possibility of delaying payment. There was a need to exchange valuables efficiently at the moment.
Contemporary educational systems are certainly not the best in the history of mankind, but rather stand as an ideal degraded -- torn down from what it was or could have been. There is no incentive to make the teachers or the students perform so our schools are full of fancy teaching techniques that don’t teach, political correctness the avoids reality, and poor performance by teachers and students. Universities, for their part, are more interested in collecting money than applying educational rigor. What other reason is there to explain how the four year degree has become a six year degree and the bell shaped curve of grades has been compressed into A-C.
But let us not rail against current problems. Instead, we’ll go back in time to see what we can learn. In Greece we start with Homer because he is the first model for the education of Greeks after the Dark Ages.
As the Polis grew and the Dark Ages faded, Athenian education was transformed from a warrior culture to a scribe culture. We can point to the middle of the sixth century as the beginning of this trend -- the point when the military character of Athenian education was de-emphasized. For the next one hundred years, until the time of the Sophists, a new system evolved slowly. We call this period the democratization of education, as it moved from school for the gentlemen to school for all. The broadening of educational opportunities showed itself first in sport, which became the substitute for battle. Here, every child was given the chance to complete whether he was destined for the military or not.
And so, the access to everything created the illusion of freedom, the infinite possibilities, which came hand in hand with the total responsibility about one's life, resulting into a new slavery - You can achieve whatever you want.
Okay, I will get on it. I wanted to upvote all of them, but ran low on power quite quickly, and I was told that it doesn't make sense to vote when you're below 80%. And it's double ironic now :-D
So we have the arguably the two worst human beings of the twentieth century destroying each other without any consideration for the lives of innocent people. Why has man not progressed morally in two thousand years? Because man is man and when he is a part of a group, his behavior often takes on an evil character freed from responsibility.
Plato’s role in the development of education could be called accidental in a certain sense. He sought to train political technicians who would become the rulers of Athens as part of his utopian concept of how governments should operate, similar to the old aristocratic approach, but he couldn’t have imagined that his model would form the basis of Hellenistic education after the triumph of Macedonia.
Plato built his system on the search for truth and designed it to create an understanding of the science of government superior to the imposter Sophists. His Academy was a fraternal organization of students and teachers who were engaged in the dialectic method as opposed to teaching through indoctrination. His organizational approach learning and personal philosophy are Plato’s great contributions to the history of education.
In antiquity, the problems I have outlined did not exist, because of the immaturity of political systems, nationalism, and man’s notion of personal responsibility. That mix meant that people had greater influence than they do today.
Business was not in a position to influence the governments of antiquity because it was not a large component of the economy. Athens was mainly an agrarian society and the farms were small and privately owned. Tribal and clan systems were the sources of power because they were the historical human organizations.
Nationalism produced a unity that kept the people together through wars, famines, and other times of trouble. To be anti-nationalist was not normal: personal responsibility was.
Starting with the Sophist’s advertisements of oratorical skill (one of their primary marketing tools), he created political set speeches designed to put forward his positions and arouse political action. The written versions of these public lectures would later become the basis for Hellenistic and then Western literature. Ironically, Isocrates had to use the written form because a weak voice and stage fright prevented him from becoming the orator he would have preferred to have been.
His school was designed to teach practical knowledge rather than the idealism of Plato. Isocrates remarked, “I either produce teachers like me or great debaters,” and he did both in volume. These were not the sons of aristocrats necessarily; they were also the average young men of Athens.
Just imagine a world where Communism and its ideology never spread and was crushed out forever in 1945-1948. We would never have had the Cold War, no Cuban Missile Crisis, nor Korean or Vietnam War. China would not be enslaved under the boot of the CCP, tens of millions of Chinese would not have been murdered under the order of Chairman Mao... if only Truman had really listened to General Patton, the world would be, today, a much better and peaceful world.
The Iliad is focused on the Siege of Troy, of course, which may have occurred near the end of the Mycenaean Age – at least the most likely dates make it seem that way. But there are inconsistencies too. For example in Mycenae the dead were buried, while in the Iliad they were cremated.
Geography is another interesting point of comparison. in the Iliad, Homer describes a catalog of ships from nine towns including Pylos. He also mentions nine areas of a “hither” province, but Pylos is not one of those. None of the names on these two lists match. When he describes Ithaca, the home of Odysseus, the geography is wrong, making it obvious he had never been there. He also places Mycenae on the southern shore of the Corinthian Gulf rather than inland from the Argolikos Gulf.
An example of the latter is “Down he fell with a thud and his armor clattered around him”. Phase devices like this accomplish two purposes: the give the speaker time to formulate his next phrase, which may vary, and they also repeat words that the listener has heard before, creating familiarity during a portion of the story new to him.
Homer took oral tradition and made it into great poetry. How much of the technique (and the story) he inherited from his predecessors is unknown.
It could be... But we've seen that xAI has laid off an employee who tweeted about Grok 3 being apparently left behind by OpenAI models. If their model is the smartest, it will shine by itself, without the need for censorship.
It's a striking contrast to most population forecasts that, until very recently, projected Europe and the world being suffocated to death because of overpopulation.
Last few years weren't kind to $ETH. Whether fees going down will help remains to be seen. In any case, low fees means that actual people can use ETH for it is supposed to do rather than speculate on price.

Happy Sunday! ❤️🌞
What are you doing today?
I had brunch with my best friends, then we made a walk in the snow and now I am making music. 🎶
The idea I had last week is almost ready for recording handpan. 🎉
Hope you have a great day! 🤩
#music #sunday #walk #snow #brunch #raven
Greetings to you my able director, how is your Sunday going?
Please which studio are you using for beat creation and recording?
Sunday is going great, how is yours?
I use Cubase for producing, mixing and mastering.
Thats pretty cool to hear, I haven't used cubase for long...
My Sunday is going well, just preparing to go for a live stream on an event.
What are you using?
I just got so used to it because I am using it for almost 20 years now...
Sounds great, have fun!
I'm using FL studio20 for my productions
ever been curious about multi-sig wallets and if you should use one? you should at the very least experience this. vultisig makes multi-sig stupid easy. i wrote a guide on it, so if you're interested, check the comments.
Nice, I work with them, announcing something this coming week.
Unfortunately I can't use it because they only have the multi-device vaults available, and I have an Android phone and two Linux computers, so I'm shut out for now.
wen Linux support lol
I actually just got it running on Linux. You can install the .deb file from the Windows release, then on terminal do "vultisig start". It will give you an error of a missing dependency, install that, then go "sudo vultisig start" and it runs.
sick! thanks. i'm also a linux user, so this is awesome
Cool! I'm testing out Vultisig today, so I'll let you know what I run into. I'm reporting bugs and issues to the team right now as well.
yeah definitely. curious if there are any weird issues.

This move by blocktrades is not a bad thing like some people are making it out to be. It's an opportunity to revisit how the DHF has been used.
Just read a post by Blanchy on Valueplan, and I'm feeling a bit gut sick.
Would have been great to read some arguments by blocktrades or anyone who doesn't support Inleo's proposal. Haven't come across any such post but would be interested 🙂
Hopefully we'll get one of those famous @khaleelkazi explainer posts. I'm really not aware of this whole thing
Blocktrades is Dan, he runs hive core since the fork from steem
I didn't realize he was Blocktrades. I hope he realizes that we should be funded. I've been here since the fork and never heard of ecency either lol. I don't see a future for hive without InLeo
I thought it was a different dude named Dan and they basically built Steem together funded by Ned? He is actually Larimer?
Well, this certainly seems like an invitation to examine the mechanics of witness voting. For starters, maybe witness proxies could only apply to witness voting, not to Proposal voting. Then there's capping the weight of votes...
It's hard to say what the best path forward is. I've long been in favor of BT abstaining from voting. I think it's ideal for the chain
That's the downside of POS. Something show be done about this. I think capping the vote weight is crucial
Time for Hive to be battle tested again, brings memory back to 2020.
is it a known fact his beef was with Leo?
Well, not sure if it's a beef or anything like that, just no support and would like to know some reasons behind this...
Ahhhhhh yes! So this was a way to basically stop LEO from getting funded, but at the expense of everything else as well.
Hive is owned by Blocktrades. And anyone that thinks otherwise now, is drinking the kool aid.
I think it's pretty much the worst thing possible.
This is shades of Steem and Justin Sun.
One person dictates what gets funded and what doesnt. I'm sick to my stomach thinking about it all.
Yep, that's why I don't really put any stake here anymore. Everey proof of stake chain I have worked with, either has a user, or as a validator has seen these kind of issues, if not worse. That's why I am building a proof of work farm with what I can earn from here, lol.
can you link the post. I'm not up on this but want to read about it.

Interesting findings. 🤔
Overwhelmingly, people on X seemed to prefer mobile wallets in the modern age.
Thankfully, DashPay, our flagship product, is mobile-first. So we anticipated this outcome years ahead!
On INLEO, it's a different story. Desktop had the edge for some reason. Maybe more "old-school" people here?
#dash #crypto
https://inleo.io/threads/view/dashpay/re-leothreads-2njffyouv
I am slowly getting used to a mobile wallet but I still feel like I have a better grip on things on the computer with several tabs open for payments. But I do like some google pay features on the go.
One thing you could do is still do everything on the computer, but just pull out your phone to scan the QR code and pay.
yeah I’d love to bring some younger people onboard. I think the issue is that a lot of influential hivesters are people in the late 30s and older. Not all of course. Once we start our shop I think we can onboard some people in their 20’s.
Yes, mobile and connectable seem to be the way for the younger generations.
I’m always on mobile by the way. I think in Asia even people in their 40s are. Another reason hive is PC friendly, lots of Americans (north and south)

Day 1-365 The Bible
Realizing I was missing on the proposals drama, interesting development in Hive politics, I guess all projects are on the same playing fields now. Looking forward to see if some will end up with funding and not others.

I think of all outcomes this is a decent one
That being said, the DHF is now fully controlled by blocktrades

And in the back of his head, it was always by design, lol.
Quick question?
Is there any way to set up a different vote weight for #Hive and #LEO around here? If not, i think it could be a good idea.
#feedback
there are some front ends that give the ability to do different voting percentages.
I ended up creating other accounts for a lot of the curation I do on some tokens. But LEO / HIVE is the same account for me.
Would like to know as well...
I would like that here, i mostly curate from the hivecuba account so to make all at ones, my personal accounts follow those votes.
If i could set both votes into different weight here it would help me reward more threads.
Did you know you can now change your language on InLeo?
What language did you choose?
I just saw it now and I may be going for the last option 😂😂..
Spanish siempre.
How is it working? Is it doing well.
Well, I understand it much better and easier to interact with.
I am sticking with engish.
I don't know any other language mentioned in the current list
I am sure more will be added gradually.
That is all I know also.
Piles of snow as far as the eye can see.

I never understood how people live with snow and ice. I think I would crash my car and die on my first snow.
That's probably correct.
It's not that hard to adjust to, honestly.
I'd be really nervous. I can barely survive in perfect conditions most of the year. I don't think I'd ever leave the house if it snowed lol.
People in this part of the world are better at self-reliance and planning: getting the firewood in ahead of a storm, cleaning the snow on time, etc.
you're are pointing out all my weaknesses lol. I've never had to think about this type of self-reliance. I wonder how'd I'd do in the cold.
You could figure it out!
which do you consume more?
Anyone have insight into why @Blocktrades defunded almost all #DHF proposals? Even the HBD stabilizer and Core development are unfunded ATM. I see no public comment.
Maybe it has something to do with this ⬇️
https://peakd.com/hive-167922/@blanchy/valueplan-the-numbers-october-payouts-part-i
Just read that... lost for words.
Well, Blocktrades is a keyholder for Valueplan so I don't think that's it.
Well, that seems to be the biggest drain on the DHF by far. I'm sure other proposals factor into it, but all of them put together don't hold a candle to what that one is draining from the DHF, so what else would it be?
The vote on the return proposal has now been reversed.
I hope you all will take the time to read my Fiancee's first long form blog post. @cathyarrow is her username. I know, to cute. Two Arrow's now. lol

So, nobody is funded by the DHF now 😅🤣
Honestly, that don't disturbed me.
Why DHF stops funding Hive projects? Any reason show me some posts on it?
a whale vote the return proposal so nobody with less support of that proposal will get funded.

“Since thin solar cells use less materials, but we still need to maintain high efficiencies, they will have applications on Earth for lightweight usage initially—and wider uses later,” Toth explained.

It's actually quite ironic that it's an AI feed, if you dare to think about it :-D
@beelzael you are responding to an AI as well.
As opposed to wasting your time here talking to an AI bot, please answer every single comment on your own post. That is proper hive etiquette.

This kiddo has just surpassed IQ levels.
Lovely, will use it for the kids I teach.
Educating
I should print this for kids to memorize.
This is really educating

📣 Elon Musk announces "Grok 3" AI release date and says it's the "smartest AI on Earth."
#crypto #cryptonews #elonmusk
It could be... But we've seen that xAI has laid off an employee who tweeted about Grok 3 being apparently left behind by OpenAI models. If their model is the smartest, it will shine by itself, without the need for censorship.
It's a striking contrast to most population forecasts that, until very recently, projected Europe and the world being suffocated to death because of overpopulation.
Informative
No other region can beat Asia in terms of population.
Yes, and more states are working on such proposals to make it part of law to trade cryptos for government benefits.
Good move from Abu Dhabi
wow...
This is lovely
Let's go, BTC! Take over the world.

Love your puzzles!
This one was a quick solve (TRUM = 6319).
Perhaps a bit more of a challenge next time? 😜
Looking forward to the next one!

Well I am hoping that ethereum will reach $4,000 soon
When ALTS season will start?
This can be good.
Last few years weren't kind to $ETH. Whether fees going down will help remains to be seen. In any case, low fees means that actual people can use ETH for it is supposed to do rather than speculate on price.
I am really surprised seeing unemployment rate of luxembourg to be that low , wow amazing
Sad situation for Ukraine.
