Taiwan is a hotbed of talent in the semiconductor industry as it is home to TSMC, the world's biggest and most advanced chipmaker. The U.S. has sought to tap into this talent, and bring more chipmaking capabilities to its shores, by convincing TSMC to build more manufacturing capacity in the country.
Taiwan's MJIB said it set up a special task force at the end of 2020 to investigate allegations of "illegal poaching" of talent.
"Chinese enterprises often disguise their identities through various means, including setting up operations under the guise of Taiwanese, overseas Chinese, or foreign-invested companies, while in reality being backed by Chinese capital, establishing unauthorized business locations in Taiwan without government approval, and using employment agencies to falsely assign employees to Taiwanese firm," the ministry said.
The structure of the Tencent-backed spinoff is "innovative and aims to highlight the value of Ubisoft's top franchises, while also not ceding overall control to Tencent on paper," Piers Harding-Rolls, research director of games at Ampere Analysis, told CNBC via email.
"However, to get the most from these franchises, I expect Tencent to have a stronger influence in cross-platform expansion especially in areas where it has deep expertise such as mobile and PC gaming and to hold more influence generally," he added.
TD Cowen's Doug Creutz and Mei Lun Quach said they don't believe the deal will solve lingering issues impacting the remaining part of Ubisoft that will continue to exist after the transaction completes.
The spinoff will lead to "additional complexity for investors attempting to value the company," they said in a note Thursday, adding it "appears to be driven by the Guillemot family's desire to retain effective control of the Ubisoft parent."
The investment bank's analysts added that "it's not clear to us that the 'everything else' remaining has significant value in a market where the big franchises are becoming ever more dominant."
The deal is expected to close before the end of 2025, pending all necessary regulatory clearances.
Michael Pachter, managing director of equity research at Wedbush Securities, said that he thinks Ubisoft management is "overly optimistic that this will result in investors valuing the company much higher."
"The rest of Ubisoft is burdened by high operating expenses and debt. The company isn't magically worth more solely because they separate the good stuff from the bad stuff," he added.
Ubisoft released its newest title Assassin's Creed Shadows, the latest installment in Ubisoft's top game franchise, last week.
The game secured generally positive reviews, getting an average reviewer score of 82 on review aggregation site Metacritic.
Hangzhou-based Unitree Robotics last month briefly sold two humanoid robots to consumers on the e-commerce platform JD.com, as per local media. Meanwhile, Shanghai-based robotics startup Agibot, also known as Zhiyuan Robotics, has matched Optimus's goal to produce 5,000 robots this year, according to the South China Morning Post.
As Chinese electric vehicle companies like BYD begin outpacing Tesla's growth and undercutting its prices, experts say a similar dynamic could play out in humanoid robotics.
"China has the potential to replicate its disruptive impact from the EV industry in the humanoid space. However, this time the disruption could extend far beyond a single industry, potentially transforming the labor force itself," said Reyk Knuhtsen, analyst at SemiAnalysis, an independent research and analysis company specializing in semiconductors and AI.
Unitree made a major splash in the robot's space in January when 16 of its highest-performing H1 humanoid robots joined a group of human dancers to celebrate the Lunar New Year in a demonstration broadcast on national television.
But there are signs that China's progress in robots go much further. Morgan Stanley's February research note found that the country has led the world in patent filings mentioning "humanoid" over the past five years, with 5,688 patents compared with 1,483 from the United States.
Large players such as Xiaomi and EV makers, such as BYD, Chery, and Xpeng, are also involved in the humanoid robot space.
"Our research suggests China continues to show the most impressive progress in humanoid robotics where startups are benefitting from established supply chains, local adoption opportunities, and strong degrees of national government support," the note said.
Musk predicted that he'd have over 1,000, or a few thousand, Optimus robots working at Tesla in 2025. According to Chinese state media, EV makers like BYD and Geely have already deployed some of Unitree's humanoid robots at their factories.
Lee said that increased adoption will coincide with a "very fast" decline in component costs, also noting that China owns around 70% of the supply chain for these components.
According to a report by SemiAnalysis earlier this month, the Unitree G1 — "the only viable humanoid robot on the market" — is entirely decoupled from American components.
Bank of America analysts predicted in a research note this month that the deployment of humanoid robots will accelerate rapidly, aided by the development of AI, with global annual sales reaching 1 million units by 2030 and 3 billion humanoid robots in operation by 2060.
What followed was several years of intense scrutiny on Ma's empire and China's biggest technology companies. Regulators clamped down on practices from giants that they viewed as anticompetitive, dished out billions of dollars of fines on companies including Alibaba, forced changes to Ant Group's structure and brought in a plethora of rules touching many areas of technology.
"During that time period a great sense of uncertainty and confusion hovered over employees. While there was a wait-and-see sort of mentality that set in, the problem was that as time passed, many didn't know just how long that would be," Brian Wong, a former Alibaba executive and author of "The Tao of Alibaba," told CNBC.
"While China's economy during the start of Covid initially remained robust, following the lock-downs everything turned and the combination of disrupted supply chains and changes in the economic climate only compounded the concerns of where all of this was headed."
The meeting has helped Alibaba's share price this year. And it appears to have also instilled new confidence in Alibaba to hire and invest.
"It gave us the confidence ... to put our earnings back into capex [capital expenditure] and investments and also hire people," Alibaba's Tsai said, referencing a more than $50 billion investment in AI infrastructure over the next three years that the company announced in February.
AI success
A large part of Alibaba's stock rally this year has been driven by the euphoria around DeepSeek and investors looking at tech giants in China to see what they're doing with AI technology.
While Alibaba was early in the AI model game, it was the release of a research paper from Chinese firm DeepSeek this year that forced all eyes to focus on what was going on in China. DeepSeek claimed its AI model was trained at a fraction of the cost of leading AI players and on less-advanced Nvidia chips, leading to a global stock sell-off.
"DeepSeek was a wake up call that China tech is not just sitting idle on AI and this indirectly benefits Alibaba as the appetite for AI is clear in China," Wedbush Securities' Ives said.

Utah has become the first state to ban fluoride in public drinking water, pushing past opposition from dentists and national health organizations who warn the move will lead to medical problems that disproportionately affect low-income communities.

Since 2015, federal health officials have recommended a fluoridation level of 0.7 milligrams per liter of water. For five decades before that, the recommended upper range was 1.2 milligrams per liter. The World Health Organization has set a safe limit for fluoride in drinking water of 1.5 milligrams per liter.
The addition of low levels of fluoride to drinking water has long been considered one of the greatest public health achievements of the past century — one of the most cost-effective ways to prevent tooth decay on a large scale.

The retirement this year of a liberal justice puts majority control of the court in play.

Taiwan's Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau (MIJB) said in a statement that SMIC had used a Samoa-based entity as cover to set up a subsidiary on the island "under the guise of foreign investment" and has been "actively recruiting" talent from Taiwan.
CNBC was unable to independently verify the claims and SMIC was not immediately available for comment.
The ministry said Taiwan began investigating the issue in December 2024. Eleven Chinese enterprises suspected of paoching talent were investigated, it said, with agents conducting searches at 34 locations and questioning 90 individuals.
SMIC is China's biggest semiconductor manufacturing firm. It was thrust into the spotlight in 2023 when it was revealed to be the maker of the 7 nanometer chip in Huawei's smartphone at the time. A few years prior, SMIC was put on a U.S. government export blacklist.
China has been trying to ramp up its chipmaking capabilities via SMIC, but the company remains behind competitors like TSMC in Taiwan. Chip export restrictions imposed by the U.S. also mean SMIC is unable to access the latest chipmaking tools from critical suppliers like ASML that could allow it to catch up.
Ubisoft shares surged on Friday after the French video game publisher announced a deal to spin out some of its best-selling franchises.
On Thursday, Ubisoft revealed plans to form a new gaming subsidiary, with Chinese technology giant Tencent investing 1.16 billion euros ($1.25 billion) into the unit.
The subsidiary will include Ubisoft's best-known games brands, including Assassin's Creed, Far Cry and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, according to a press release.
Ubisoft shares jumped 11% Friday morning before paring gains later in the day to trade 9% higher.
The game maker said Thursday that its newly formed unit would "focus on building game ecosystems designed to become truly evergreen and multi-platform."
The investment from Tencent values the new subsidiary at 4 billion euros, Ubisoft said. That's more than double Ubisoft's current market capitalization.
Investors were hoping for a move from Ubisoft to clear up uncertainty surrounding its future after a series of challenges faced by the firm in recent years.
Ubisoft has been plagued by various issues, from financial struggles to delays to some of its key games — including its most recently released Assassin's Creed Shadows title.
In February, the firm reported a 52% drop in fiscal third-quarter net bookings, beset by underperformance of some of its key games.

In November 2023, Jack Ma posted an internal memo at Alibaba, urging the e-commerce giant he helped create to "correct its course." The message was as a rallying cry by one of China's most prominent tech leaders to a company going through one of the most tumultuous times in its history.
Alibaba's share price was near record lows, growth was stalling amid intensifying competition, management changes were coming thick and fast, and Beijing was still closely scrutinizing the company. Ma himself was barely in the public view.
But his message may have instilled some new hope in Alibaba — the e-commerce giant is now seeing growth in its core business and has become one of the leading artificial intelligence players in China and globally, competing with the likes of OpenAI and DeepSeek. And Alibaba is now back in favor with the Chinese government.
Alibaba's U.S.-listed shares have quietly risen nearly 60% this year, adding more than $100 billion to the company's valuation.
"China tech has awoken being led by Alibaba and investors globally are viewing this as the best way to way China tech ... and we agree. Alibaba is in pole position to benefit from AI and cloud spend," Dan Ives, global head of technology research at Wedbush Securities, told CNBC.

As Chinese electric vehicle companies like BYD begin outpacing Tesla's growth and undercutting its prices, experts say a similar dynamic could play out in humanoid robotics.
"China has the potential to replicate its disruptive impact from the EV industry in the humanoid space. However, this time the disruption could extend far beyond a single industry, potentially transforming the labor force itself," said Reyk Knuhtsen, analyst at SemiAnalysis, an independent research and analysis company specializing in semiconductors and AI.
Unitree made a major splash in the robot's space in January when 16 of its highest-performing H1 humanoid robots joined a group of human dancers to celebrate the Lunar New Year in a demonstration broadcast on national television.
But there are signs that China's progress in robots go much further. Morgan Stanley's February research note found that the country has led the world in patent filings mentioning "humanoid" over the past five years, with 5,688 patents compared with 1,483 from the United States.
Large players such as Xiaomi and EV makers, such as BYD, Chery, and Xpeng, are also involved in the humanoid robot space.
"Our research suggests China continues to show the most impressive progress in humanoid robotics where startups are benefitting from established supply chains, local adoption opportunities, and strong degrees of national government support," the note said.
Musk predicted that he'd have over 1,000, or a few thousand, Optimus robots working at Tesla in 2025. According to Chinese state media, EV makers like BYD and Geely have already deployed some of Unitree's humanoid robots at their factories.
Lee said that increased adoption will coincide with a "very fast" decline in component costs, also noting that China owns around 70% of the supply chain for these components.
According to a report by SemiAnalysis earlier this month, the Unitree G1 — "the only viable humanoid robot on the market" — is entirely decoupled from American components.
Bank of America analysts predicted in a research note this month that the deployment of humanoid robots will accelerate rapidly, aided by the development of AI, with global annual sales reaching 1 million units by 2030 and 3 billion humanoid robots in operation by 2060.
What followed was several years of intense scrutiny on Ma's empire and China's biggest technology companies. Regulators clamped down on practices from giants that they viewed as anticompetitive, dished out billions of dollars of fines on companies including Alibaba, forced changes to Ant Group's structure and brought in a plethora of rules touching many areas of technology.
"During that time period a great sense of uncertainty and confusion hovered over employees. While there was a wait-and-see sort of mentality that set in, the problem was that as time passed, many didn't know just how long that would be," Brian Wong, a former Alibaba executive and author of "The Tao of Alibaba," told CNBC.
"While China's economy during the start of Covid initially remained robust, following the lock-downs everything turned and the combination of disrupted supply chains and changes in the economic climate only compounded the concerns of where all of this was headed."
The meeting has helped Alibaba's share price this year. And it appears to have also instilled new confidence in Alibaba to hire and invest.
"It gave us the confidence ... to put our earnings back into capex [capital expenditure] and investments and also hire people," Alibaba's Tsai said, referencing a more than $50 billion investment in AI infrastructure over the next three years that the company announced in February.

A large part of Alibaba's stock rally this year has been driven by the euphoria around DeepSeek and investors looking at tech giants in China to see what they're doing with AI technology.
While Alibaba was early in the AI model game, it was the release of a research paper from Chinese firm DeepSeek this year that forced all eyes to focus on what was going on in China. DeepSeek claimed its AI model was trained at a fraction of the cost of leading AI players and on less-advanced Nvidia chips, leading to a global stock sell-off.
"DeepSeek was a wake up call that China tech is not just sitting idle on AI and this indirectly benefits Alibaba as the appetite for AI is clear in China," Wedbush Securities' Ives said.

Utah has become the first state to ban fluoride in public drinking water, pushing past opposition from dentists and national health organizations who warn the move will lead to medical problems that disproportionately affect low-income communities.
Republican Gov. Spencer Cox signed legislation Thursday barring cities and communities from deciding whether to add the mineral to their water systems.
Florida, Ohio, and South Carolina are considering similar measures, while in New Hampshire, North Dakota, and Tennessee, lawmakers have rejected them. A bill in Kentucky to make fluoridation optional stalled in the state Senate.
However, communities sometimes exceed the recommended levels because fluoride occurs naturally at higher levels in certain water sources. In 2011, officials reported that 2 in 5 U.S. adolescents had at least mild tooth streaking or spottiness because of too much fluoride.
Since 2015, federal health officials have recommended a fluoridation level of 0.7 milligrams per liter of water. For five decades before that, the recommended upper range was 1.2 milligrams per liter. The World Health Organization has set a safe limit for fluoride in drinking water of 1.5 milligrams per liter.
The addition of low levels of fluoride to drinking water has long been considered one of the greatest public health achievements of the past century — one of the most cost-effective ways to prevent tooth decay on a large scale.

Crawford is backed by a wide range of Democrats, including the liberal justices who hold a 4-3 majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court and former President Barack Obama. The retirement this year of a liberal justice puts majority control of the court in play.

Taiwan's justice ministry alleged that SMIC used a Samoa-based entity as cover to set up an entity on the island and has been "actively recruiting" talent.
Taiwan investigators on Friday alleged that Chinese chipmaker Semiconductor Manufacturing International Co. (SMIC) illegally recruited high-technology talent.
Taiwan's Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau (MIJB) said in a statement that SMIC had used a Samoa-based entity as cover to set up a subsidiary on the island "under the guise of foreign investment" and has been "actively recruiting" talent from Taiwan.
CNBC was unable to independently verify the claims and SMIC was not immediately available for comment.
The ministry said Taiwan began investigating the issue in December 2024. Eleven Chinese enterprises suspected of paoching talent were investigated, it said, with agents conducting searches at 34 locations and questioning 90 individuals.
SMIC is China's biggest semiconductor manufacturing firm. It was thrust into the spotlight in 2023 when it was revealed to be the maker of the 7 nanometer chip in Huawei's smartphone at the time. A few years prior, SMIC was put on a U.S. government export blacklist.
China has been trying to ramp up its chipmaking capabilities via SMIC, but the company remains behind competitors like TSMC in Taiwan. Chip export restrictions imposed by the U.S. also mean SMIC is unable to access the latest chipmaking tools from critical suppliers like ASML that could allow it to catch up.

Ubisoft shares surged on Friday after the French video game publisher announced a deal to spin out some of its best-selling franchises.
On Thursday, Ubisoft revealed plans to form a new gaming subsidiary, with Chinese technology giant Tencent investing 1.16 billion euros ($1.25 billion) into the unit.
The subsidiary will include Ubisoft's best-known games brands, including Assassin's Creed, Far Cry and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, according to a press release.
Ubisoft shares jumped 11% Friday morning before paring gains later in the day to trade 9% higher.
The game maker said Thursday that its newly formed unit would "focus on building game ecosystems designed to become truly evergreen and multi-platform."
The investment from Tencent values the new subsidiary at 4 billion euros, Ubisoft said. That's more than double Ubisoft's current market capitalization.
Investors were hoping for a move from Ubisoft to clear up uncertainty surrounding its future after a series of challenges faced by the firm in recent years.
Ubisoft has been plagued by various issues, from financial struggles to delays to some of its key games — including its most recently released Assassin's Creed Shadows title.
In February, the firm reported a 52% drop in fiscal third-quarter net bookings, beset by underperformance of some of its key games.
