Wild Format or Modern Format? My initial test in the current season (ENG/ITA)

Splinterlands is my favorite blockchain game for so many reasons.
One of my favorite aspects of Splinterlands is the large number of assets (NFTs and tokens).

Many assets = many investment possibilities = many investment strategies to choose from

On Splinterlands I have many goals that I would like to achieve but at the moment I have two main goals:

• **I would like to accumulate 100000 SPS staked.
• I would like to play in Diamond leagues from the first days of the season.

As for the goal related to SPS tokens I have reached 51% of my goal.

To achieve my game goal, over the past 3 months, I have focused on enhancing my card collection with an increased focus on cards that can be used in both Wild and Modern formats.

To increase the battle strength of my card collection:

• I sold cards that I never used in battle.
• I have purchased or upgraded cards that I think are useful in battle.

Wild Format or Modern Format? My initial test in the current season

Each Splinterlands player can choose between two formats of Ranked Battles: Wild Format and Modern Format.

I have created a chart to show in a graphically compact way the differences and common elements between the two formats (see image below).

Since Splinterlands introduced the split between Wild Format and Modern Format (July 14, 2022) I have always chosen to play in the Wild Format because the strongest cards I used in battle were cards from the Beta and Promo collections.

Now that I have purchased and upgraded some cards from the Chaos Legion, Untamed and Riftwatchers editions, I have asked myself the question:

Is it more convenient for me to continue playing in the Wild Format or might it be more convenient to play in the Modern Format?

To answer this question I decided to do a test in the current season.

At the beginning of the season I started playing only New Format battles.

In the Modern Format I started from a rating score of 0 points and had some initial difficulty in moving from the Novice league to the Silver III league because I had not played with level 1 cards for a long time.
I had to play many battles to get to Silver III league but then it took me
few battles and little time to reach Gold III league.

As soon as I reached the Gold III league in the New Format I started my test.

In the following picture you can see the starting point of my test:

• Modern Format - Rating: 1934 - League: Gold III - Rank: 2074
• Wild Format - Rating: 1934 - League: Gold III - Rank: 1518

To compare the results of my battles in the two formats, I played the same number of battles in both formats.
After 1 or 2 battles in one format I did 1 or 2 battles in the other format.

I played a total of 70 battles:

• 35 battles in the Modern Format
• 35 Battles in the Wild Format.

In the following images you can see the results of the 70 battles I played:

After 35 battles in the Modern Format I reached the Gold I league with a rating score of 2546 points.

After 35 battles in the Wild Format I reached the Gold II league** with a rating score of 2302 points.

In the table below I have compared the results I got from playing in both formats.

In Modern Format battles I got a much higher win rate than in Wild Format: 77% vs 60%

Having fewer cards to choose from may have been an advantage because fewer choices = less likelihood of strategic errors.

This is the explanation I have given myself for the moment to justify the fact that I have found it much easier to win battles in the Modern Format Gold leagues than in the Wild Format.

In the New Format I accumulated a higher amount of Reward Points (RP) and a higher amount of SPS than in the Wild Format because I gained a greater number of victories (winrate).

The gain in SPS per battle won was greater in the Wild Format and this means that for the same winrate, in Gold leagues, more SPS is gained in the Wild Format than in the Modern Format.

This also means that there were more active players in the Modern Format Gold leagues than in the Wild Format Gold leagues on the days I played because a lower gain per win corresponds to a Reward Pool to be divided among more battles won.

The initial part of my test showed me that playing in the New Format was more convenient and rewarding than the Wild Format.

However, 70 battles is not a large enough number to conclude my test, so I will continue throughout the season to play the same number of battles in both formats.

I am curious to see if I will have similar results in the Diamond leagues as I did in the Gold leagues and if the difference in SPS gains will be similar to what I recorded in the Gold leagues.

If I advance faster in the leagues by playing in the New Format than the Wild Format the difference in the value of rewards in SPS should tend to increase.

When the current season ends I will publish another post and have more data to analyze and share.
Based on the results I will get in this season I will decide which format to play in next season.

Wild Format o Modern Format? Il mio test nella stagione in corso

Splinterlands è il mio gioco blockchain preferito per tanti motivi.
Uno degli aspetti che più mi piace di Splinterlands è l'ampio numero degli assets (NFTs e tokens).

Tanti assets = tante possibilità di investimento = tante strategie di investimento tra cui scegliere

Su Splinterlands ho tanti obiettivi che vorrei raggiungere ma al momento ho due obiettivi principali:

• vorrei accumulare 100000 SPS staked
• vorrei giocare nelle leghe Diamond fin dai primi giorni della stagione

Per quanto riguarda l'obiettivo collegato ai token SPS ho raggiunto il 51% del mio obiettivo.

Per raggiungere il mio obiettivo di gioco negli ultimi 3 mesi mi sono focalizzato sul potenziamento della mia collezione di carte con una maggiore attenzione alle carte utilizzabili in entrambi i formati Wild e Modern.

Per aumentare la forza in battaglia della mia collezione di carte:

• ho venduto le carte che non utilizzavo mai in battaglia
• ho acquistato o potenziato carte che secondo me sono utili in battaglia

Wild Format or Modern Format? My test in the current season

Ogni giocatore di Splinterlands può scegliere tra due formati di Ranked Battles: Wild Format e Modern Format.

Ho creato uno schema per mostrare in maniera graficamente compatta le differenze e gli elementi in comune tra i due formati (vedi immagine seguente).

Da quando Splinterlands ha introdotto la suddivisione tra Wild Format e Modern Format (14 luglio 2022) io ho sempre scelto di giocare nel Wild Format perchè le carte più forti e che utilizzabo in battaglia erano carte delle collezioni Beta e Promo.

Adesso che ho acquistato e potenziato alcune carte delle edizioni Chaos Legion, Untamed e Riftwatchers mi sono posto la domanda:

E' più conveniente per me continuare a giocare nel Wild Format o potrebbe essere più conveniente giocare nel Modern Format?

Per rispondere a questa domanda ho deciso di fare un test nella stagione in corso.

All'inizio della stagione ho iniziato a giocare solo battaglie del New Format.

Nel Modern Format sono partito da un punteggio di rating di 0 punti e ho avuto qualche difficoltà iniziale per passare dalla lega Novice alla lega Silver III perchè non ero abituato a giocare con le carte di livello 1.
Ho dovuto giocare molte battaglie per arrivare in Lega Silver III ma poi ho impiegato
poche battaglie e pocho tempo per raggiungere la lega Gold III.

Appena ho raggiunto la lega Gold III nel New Format ho iniziato il mio test.

Nell'immagine seguente puoi vedere il punto di partenza del mio test:

• Modern Format - Rating: 1934 - League: Gold III - Rank: 2074
• Wild Format - Rating: 1934 - League: Gold III - Rank: 1518

Per confrontare i risultati delle mie battaglie nei due formati giocato lo stesso numero di battaglie in entrambi i formati alternando 1 o 2 battaglie in formato per poi giocare lo stesso numero nell'altro formato.

Ho giocato un totale di 70 battaglie:

• 35 battaglie nel Modern Format
• 35 Battaglie nel Wild Format

Nelle immagini seguenti puoi vedere i risultati delle 70 battaglie che ho giocato:

Dopo 35 battaglie nel Modern Format ho raggiunto la lega Gold I con un punteggio di rating di 2546 punti.

Dopo 35 battaglie nel Wild Format ho raggiunto la lega Gold II con un punteggio di rating di 2302 punti.

Nella tabella seguente ho confrontato i risultati che ho ottenuto giocando in entrambi i formati.

Nelle battaglie del Modern Format ho ottenuto un win rate molto più alto rispetto al Wild Format: 77% vs 60%

Avere un numero di carte minore tra cui scegliere può essere statp un vantaggio perchè meno scelte = meno probabilità di errori strategici.

E' questa la spiegazione che mi sono dato per il momento per giustificare il fatto che ho trovato molto più semplice vincere le battaglie nelle leghe Gold del Modern Format rispetto al Wild Format.

Nel New Format ho accumulato un quantitativo maggiore di Reward Points (RP) e un quantitativo maggiore di SPS rispetto al Wild Format perchè ho ottenuto un numero maggiore di vittorie (winrate).

Il guadagno in SPS per battaglia vinta è stato maggiore nel Wild Format e questo vuol dire che a parità di winrate, nelle leghe Gold, si guadagnano più SPS nel Wild Format rispetto al Modern Format.
Questo vuole anche significare che nelle leghe Gold del Modern Format ci sono stati più giocatori attivi rispetto alle leghe Gold del Wild Format nei giorni in cui ho giocato io perchè un guadagno per vittoria inferiore corrisponde ad una Reward Pool da dividere tra più battaglie vinte.

La parte iniziale del mio test mi ha mostrato che giocare nel New Format è stato più conveniente e premiante rispetto al Wild Format.

Però 70 battaglie non sono un numero abbastanza ampio per concludere il mio test e quindi continuerò per tutta la stagione a giocare lo stesso numero di battaglie in entrambi i formati.

Sono curioso di verificare se nelle leghe Diamond avrò risultati simili a quelli che ho ottenuto nelle leghe Gold e se la differenza dei guadagni in SPS sarà simile a quella che ho registrato nelle leghe Gold.

Se avanzerò più velocemente nelle leghe giocando nel New Format rispetto al Wild Format la differenza del valore delle ricompense in SPS dovrebbe tendenzialmente aumentare.

Quando finirà la stagione in corso pubblicherò un'altro post e avrò un numero maggiore di dati da analizzare e da condividere.
In base ai risultati che otterrò in questa stagione deciderò in quale formato giocare nella prossima stagione.

Ciao arc e grazie del commento, per il momento il formato Wild sembra più premiante per singola vittoria soprattutto per gli SPS ma il livello di gioco mi sembra più alto e un win rate più alto dovrebbe portare a maggiori ricompense, vedremo alla fine della stagione, per il momento ho poche battaglie su cui fare valutazioni ma anche se non hai carte per giocare nel Wild il tuo formato sembra essere la scelta migliore ;)

I also think modern is easier to win in because I don't have many of the alpha/beta cards near the level that I need them to be competitive. So it just doesn't really make much sense for me to go there.
