JD.com is officially the first online shop to accept digital yuan payments. This is the umpteenth trial by the Central Bank of China (CBDC) for the digital currency.
Chinese e-commerce company JD.com said Saturday that it had become the first online shop in the country to accept digital yuan as a payment method.
The integration of the digital yuan on JD.com is part of a trial by the Chinese Central Bank of using the new form of money to residents of Suzhou, near Shanghai.
Reporting from Reuters, according to the company, a subsidiary of JD, namely JD Digits which played a central role in this, was then implemented at JD.com.
In the pilot program, the Central Bank of China gave 200 digital yuan to 100,000 Suzhou citizens by a lot.
This sweepstakes in Suzhou is the second time. Previously, 50,000 residents in a city south of Shenzhen received 10 million digital yuan and could be spent at a number of malls in the city.
Yi Gang, Governor of the Central Bank of China previously said, that more than 2 billion digital yuan has been used in 4 million separate transactions.
The digital yuan is the result of the central bank's long research and development since 2014 when Bitcoin and crypto-asset markets were booming. Since mid-2020, the digital yuan has continued to be tested, including plans for the upcoming 2022 Winter Olympics.
