First, see if the fix is easy. Maybe a connection is loose or a component is fried. If this is all it is, get it fixed.

If the motherboard itself is fried, it may be cheaper to get a replacement laptop instead of a replacement motherboard made for your laptop. Hard drive or data drives may still be good, but they need to be checked independently.

Whether this is the case or not, make sure your hard drive or data drives are still working. This may be a bit harder to determine, but if the service techs say the drives are good, then the fix mentioned at the top should be enough and you're back in business.

If the hard drive or data drives themselves are damaged, then you'll need a replacement computer along with the intoxicant of your choice until you're up and running. Let's hope it doesn't get this far and the problem is one involving the first 2 paragraphs of this comment.
