Unlike the hard fork to break away from Steemit (which made a new blockchain necessary), this hard fork is just an update and there is no break from the Hive blockchain, is that correct? Same blockchain, just a newer version?

What technically happens is the chain is split in two. The difference is the witnesses stop running the old code so the old chain effectively dies.

If the Steem witnesses all stopped running it (ie Sunny Boi) then Hive would have been the survivor.

Correct. This is just a blockchain's way of upgrading and updating their systems. Very standard procedure although they are definitely noteworthy for what they "change".
