What's happening behind the scenes to bring new GHAWG content? The GHAWG Diaries is my recap of what I've been doing.
Cover image designed by @magnacarta using emojis and Excel 2007 for text. Minor edits made using MS Paint.
Introduction
There's more to #GHAWG than just daily zapfic entries and the spreadsheet I use to track them. There's research. There's review. There's also thought and inspiration. Then there are the tools involved in doing any of those tasks.
Just to keep things from getting scrambled in my head, and also to document for myself what I've been considering, I began keeping a diary of my activities as they concern #GHAWG. For that reason, I decided to share these diary entries with everyone on Hive blockchain (including the LeoFinance community at InLeo).
On Mondays which don't feature a GHAWG, Uninterrupted
post (GHAWG-U)-- eventually replaced by GHAWG, Remastered
(GHAWG-R)-- I'll post diary entries from the previous 7 days or between GHAWG-U/R posts if the time between them is short. Due to tech woes and other difficulties, TGD63 will have enough entries for 1 month; even when I was offline, I was doing something for GHAWG. The first entry starts on 2025-February-03.
Before anyone scratches their heads at a few terms, here are 3 I began using many posts ago:
Term | Meaning |
---|---|
►Rat Bike ◄[1] | Code name for #GHAWG (the first and current zapfic serial) |
►Blue Lion ◄[2] | Code name for the middle zapfic serial in the GHAWG Universe |
►The Bronze ◄[3] | Code name for the final zapfic serial in the GHAWG Universe |

📓 As the ►Route 66◄[4] storyline was coming to a close and Felix Legion found itself at the eastern terminus of the iconic road in ►Chicago, Illinois◄[5], US, I had no idea what I was going to write. By the time Felix Legion was in Chicago, I came up with a storyline I could feel good about. To this day I feel good about what I had written for the day Felix Legion was in Chicago.
Until then, I was drawing a blank. It wasn't exactly writers block since I had ideas; they just didn't seem to fit the moment. Things fell into place for me when I decided to make recurring character and independent journalist ►Aníbal Rivera◄[6] part of this storyline by using a parallel story structure.
I'm going through something similar in getting Felix Legion to deliver ►The Kids◄[7] to their ultimate destination at the ►University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill◄[8]. I won't need the parallel storyline structure this time, but I need to find a way to get everyone to ►UNC◄[9]. If GHAWG was an airport, then I'm running out of runway to get Rat Bike
where it needs to be. For now, the zapfic queue is in a virtual holding pattern, but the time draws near when I have to get Felix Legion where it needs to be.

📓 With Felix Legion almost at the end of the 5th segment of ►David Guardia◄[10]'s ►Epic Ride◄[11]-- from Chicago to Chapel Hill and UNC-- I need to start looking at the final segment, the ride westward from UNC to various points in Iowa. I have at least one set piece I want to include, and that one takes place in Iowa, where the Iowa 5 (Felix Legion less The Kids). I should include another set piece earlier, but I have no idea what it should be or where it should take place. I have time to get that figured out, so I won't worry about it.

📓 While walking through my neighborhood I switched my MP3 app to a music artist I hadn't heard in a long time: 🕸️U2🕸️. Specifically, Peak U2 during the late 1980s. 🕸️"Hawkmoon 269"🕸️ sounds and feels like something to associate with David and ►Rhonda Bella Guardia◄[12]. At the moment they are ►The Newlyweds◄[13] and winding down Rat Bike
, but this song is a better for them in the sequel zapfic serial code-named Blue Lion
. I'm not saying that I will incorporate this song into Blue Lion
for them, but it seems to be a perfect fit for them.
"Hawkmoon 269" is found only on the 1988 live touring compilation album 🕸️Rattle and Hum🕸️. Another song from this album I've been listening to is the U2 cover of "All Along the Watchtower," written by singer and songwriter 🕸️Bob Dylan🕸️ and made famous by Jimi Hendrix. Unlike "Hawkmoon 269," I'm not getting anything for 🕸️"All Along the Watchtower"🕸️; it's still worth listening to just to see if it helps me come up with something for GHAWG.
A third U2 song I've been listening to is the lead track from the 1987 album 🕸️The Joshua Tree🕸️, 🕸️"Where the Streets Have No Name"🕸️. This feels like riding music David Guardia can use when riding alone. The next time we will see him riding alone will be either in the second half of Blue Lion
or at some point in the final zapfic serial code-named The Bronze
. As with the other 2 U2 songs, I'm not saying I will incorporate this one into The GHAWG Universe. I mention these songs because I am using them to aid me in the creative process to help me come up with new ideas for GHAWG or to help me make a breakthrough in Rat Bike
.

📓 Today I extended the zapfic queue to 2025-February-14. Not only did I add a couple of zapfic entries, but I was able to slot the earlier entries I had written last week but couldn't include at the time. Now that these entries have been slotted, I can start the next day of travel toward UNC. More importantly, I can focus on developing the key scene I've had in mind for a long time, one in which we see the characters in ways we hadn't seen them before.
Friday, 2025-February-07
📓 For about a month I was adding between 0 and 2 entries to the zapfic queue, and more often it was 0 with a few days having 1. So the zapfic queue had been inching its way to 2025-February-14. Today I was able to tie up enough loose ends in my mind to create at least the first part of the set piece scene to take place in the totally fictional town of Bolivion, Virginia, US. This burst of activity helped me push the zapfic queue from 2025-February-14 (B14) to 2025-March-04 (C04). This happens to be one day shy of the 2nd anniversary of the first zapfic entry I published to LeoThreads for GHAWG. To finish this set piece scene, I would like to include a chase sequence.
Saturday, 2025-February-08
📓 Picking up where I left off, I was able to include the chase scene to the set piece. This chase scene is what I had intended for the original chase scene back when the ►uncanny Manny Rey◄[14] was David Guardia's co-pilot, only I flubbed it; it looked better in my mind than when I committed the scene to blockchain. Thanks to the chase scene, I was able to push the zapfic queue to 2025-March-14 (C14). At this point, Felix Legion arrives in ►Chapel Hill◄[15], with the ►University of North Carolina◄[16] a short distance away.
Sunday, 2025-February-09
📓 When the week started, my zapfic queue productivity was puttering at around 1 entry day, if that. Some days had 2 entries, but more had 0. So by then the zapfic queue was at 2025-February-14 (B14), about a week of entries in it.
By yesterday, I was able to get the zapfic queue to 2025-March-14 (C14). I was able to come up with the set piece scene in the fictional town of Bolivion, Virginia, US. For good measure, I even followed that up with a short chase scene.
Today, I was able to push the zapfic queue to 2025-April-19 (D19) by getting The Kids to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I was able to write zapfic entries showing changes to Sanjay Rampersad. I was even able to include a Felix Legion name change I had been considering for Lionel Odunsi. Originally, David Guardia-- ►Templar◄[17]-- had assigned to him the name ►Quartermaster◄[18]-- think 🕸️"Q"🕸️ from any of the 🕸️James Bond🕸️ movies-- because of his ability to find the crew overnight lodging. Given my own difficulty in remembering this name for Lionel, I decided he should have an easier club name, one more in tune with who he is. As a native Nigerian, I noted his affinity toward the Finn character from the Disney-era Star Wars movies since actor John Boyega is Nigerian-British. This affinity is shown by his choice of Hive account name for decentralized social media: @finnsjacket
. While Templar had an easier time remembering that Lionel was Quartermaster, I used the unexpected media Q&A at UNC as the opportunity for Templar to rename Quartermaster Finn
; this would also make it easier for his classmates at UNC to remember.

📓 Sunday morning in the wee hours I lost Internet access. The laptop I've been using for the last few years has been behaving oddly in recent weeks. First the keyboard was repeating certain letters even when I was typing gently. Then the wireless antenna became so weak that although I was connected to the Internet any request I made to visit a site timed out. Once I confirmed that the problem was my device and not my access, I decided to work on getting the antenna replaced. I will need a bit of time to get that done. So for at least the next few days I will be offline.
One thing my lack of Internet access gave me was time to think about the story I want to write for Rat Bike
. This zapfic serial is focused on the Epic Ride which David Guardia began in July 2028 from his hometown of ►Bayonne, New Jersey◄[19], US and would end before Halloween 2028 in ►Davenport, Iowa◄[20], US, the home town of his wife Rhonda Bella Guardia. The Epic Ride consists of 6 segments:
- Bayonne to ►STURGIS◄[21] -- the original purpose of GHAWG;
- STURGIS to ►Portland, Oregon◄[22] -- the mission David needed to carry out as per the uncanny Manny Rey;
- Portland to ►San Diego, California◄[23] -- how GHAWG transformed into The GHAWG Universe;
- San Diego to Chicago -- the Route 66 storyline;
- Chicago to Chapel Hill -- from prophesying in Chicago to seeing a change in Sanjay Rampersad;
- Chapel Hill to Davenport -- TBD
With the Segment 5 finished in the zapfic queue, I have one more segment of the Epic Ride to wrote about before I can declare Rat Bike
completed. This means that soon I'll need to begin porting the zapfic serial into a traditional novel format.
Rat Bike
is only a code name for this zapfic serial. For a long time I had no idea what the actual title of the story was going to be. I chose the code name Rat Bike
because early in Segment 1 David mentions the Honda motorcycle he had been riding and how it was a rat bike, a motorcycle in good enough condition to ride but ugly in appearance. What was intended to be a 3 act story with interludes eventually outgrew that structure. By the time I finished Segment 3, it became apparent to me that the Epic Ride was going to be a 6-segment ride, and each segment would have its own story to tell.
Once all these realizations became clear to me, it became easier for me to find a title. Not only do I now have a title for the entire zapfic serial-turned-novel, but I have titles for each of the 6 segments of David's Epic Ride. These 7 titles I will reveal once Rat Bike
is concluded and David and Rhonda end the Epic Ride in Davenport.

📓 Since my time offline afforded me free time I didn't have before, I decided to put that time to good use and begin porting the zapfic serial into novel format. I took the first 10 zapfic entries and expanded them into prose. Details from the zapfic entries can be found in the prose. Newer details have been added to add meat to the story hinted at by the zapfic entries. Some zapfic entries were turned into very long passages of text; others stayed more or less short just because of their nature.
If I port 10 entries a day to novel format, it should take me 2 to 3 months to get this novel written. At that pace, I should have a novel ready by May or June 2025. Ultimately it will be one novel, but I can't publish it all at one time to Hive blockchain; who will have time to read 1 post containing the equivalent of 200 printed pages (at least)? So I need to figure out how to break up the novel for serial posting on Hive blockchain. GHAWG began at LeoFinance and made the migration to InLeo, so the serialized novel will be published using InLeo. Once that's done, I'll market the novel using additional means (e-book sites, my own space, etc.).

📓 Another 10 zapfic entries have been ported. In this batch of entries, David Guardia loses his father to pneumonia and lives his life afterward. He also reaches the point where he changes his life by leaving everything behind to begin his ride to STURGIS. This turns out to be just the first of six segments of what will become (for him) his Epic Ride. He also finds himself in ►East Palestine, Ohio◄[24], US and needing the services of motorcycle mechanic ►Kaylee Chloe Callaway◄[25].
The next batch of zapfic entries I port will feature the beginning of what has become the Epic Ride. The first destination of note for David is ►Allentown, Pennsylvania◄[26], US.

📓 While running errands I was thinking of how to write one of the scenes to take place in Iowa. I was also thinking of what sequence of events needs to take place for a critical scene to take place in the middle third of the final zapfic serial code-named The Bronze
. I have plenty of time to figure out how to handle both situations, but that's where the mind goes sometimes.
As for porting Rat Bike
to novel format, today was mostly reviewing what I had written over the last two days. I was looking for places where I can show what was happening rather than describe it. Much of that involved adding dialog and characters never mentioned in the zapfic serial but are just as important for the story. Now that I have names for the characters, I can use them as soon as the character needs to be introduced. I did this with Pops (Samuel Guardia, father of David Guardia) and ►Slim◄[27] (real name ►Li Jun Fan◄[28], the courier who ends up inheriting ►Guardia Courier Services◄[29] from David).
The entries I add today feature the start of David's Epic Ride, which at the time is simply the segment between Bayonne, New Jersey, US and STURGIS.
Friday, 2025-February-14
📓 Today I spent most of the day porting one zapfic entry to novel format. However, it was the first major scene in GHAWG (later Rat Bike
). It's the scene where David Guardia was recruited into an arm wrestling tournament while he was en route to ►Sandusky, Ohio◄[30], US. The next 2 zapfic entries cover the aftermath of that tournament and how David escaped the ire of bar patrons who felt cheated by how the arm wrestling tournament ended. This scene is the prelude to how David meets the uncanny Manny Rey.
In zapfic format, it was just 3 entries. However, these entries required a scene to be developed from scratch for the novel format: some dialog, a bit of context, and more description. So far I ported the first of these three entries.
Saturday, 2025-February-15
📓 My tech woes continue, so I'm working offline. I continue porting Rat Bike
to novel format. Another 10 zapfic entries have been expanded into stories. Today's work included the first time David Guardia sets eyes on ►Rhonda Bella◄[31] only it was before either knew who the other was. This was the moment he sets eyes on the very tall redhead with ►freckles◄[32]. It's also the scene where he gets slugged in the face by ►Sinatra Hater◄[33]. To this point, I have between 50 and 60 pages written. Some of that text doesn't belong, and some of it placeholder text to remind me what I'm writing about. Tomorrow I expect to write enough to cover the last time David sees the uncanny Manny Rey.
Sunday, 2025-February-16
📓 Another 10 zapfic entries were ported to novel format. These featured David Guardia and the uncanny Manny Rey riding from ►Defiance, Ohio◄[34], US to ►Gary, Indiana◄[35], US to ►Barstow, Illinois◄[36], US. The night in Barstow sets up the final day David rides with his first co-pilot. Besides working on these entries, I went back to edit earlier work to tighten text and to add other scenes and details.
Monday, 2025-February-17
📓 It took me a week, but my tech woes were fixed. It was actually a billing snafu. I still don't understand how I could have a gap in service if I made payment before the service period ended. No matter; the next 10 zapfic entries to be ported to novel format centered around David Guardia's ►life flashing before his eyes◄[37] the moment the ►fuel tanker exploded◄ off Interstate 80 just a short distance from his entry into Iowa after leaving Illinois at 70 miles per hour while crossing over the Mississippi River. The civil unrest he and the uncanny Manny Rey avoided in Chicago, Illinois, US caught up with them near I-80 in Barstow, Illinois, US. In zapfic format, the memories are listed with bullet points.
Tuesday, 2025-February-18
📓 I'm back online, but I'm still working on porting Rat Bike
from zapfic serial to novel format. Today's batch of zapfic entries feature a ►behind-the-scenes review◄[38] of David Guardia's ride to STURGIS up to the point of the fuel tanker explosion in Le Claire, Iowa, US. I also went back to the ►flashback sequence◄[39] I worked on yesterday. I decided to turn the bullet points from zapfic format into dialog scenes for novel format.
Wednesday, 2025-February-19
📓 Today's work porting Rat Bike
from zapfic to novel format features the ►10-day-coma◄[40] in which David Guardia finds himself. David has a conversation with a facsimile of the uncanny Manny Rey, which gives way to a question-and-answer session with ►The Lord◄[41].
My inspiration for this scene came from the debut episode titled 🕸️"Emissary"🕸️ for the series 🕸️Star Trek: Deep Space Nine🕸️. This episode featured lead character Commander Benjamin Sisko communicating with celestial beings from the stable wormhole situated near the planet Bajor. The celestial beings, who are non-corporeal, inhabit this wormhole and are known by the Bajorans as "The Prophets of the Celestial Temple," or simply The Prophets. They assume the forms of people familiar with the person communicating with them. While it looked as if Commander Sisko was speaking to his son or his late wife, he was actually speaking with The Prophets. In the debut episode of ST:DS9, The Prophets selected Commander Sisko to be their Emissary to the relevant parties of the corporeal world (our plane of reality). This is the motif I chose to use for GHAWG and (so far) Rat Bike
.
Thursday, 2025-February-20
📓 Now that I'm back online, my work in porting Rat Bike
from zapfic to novel format has slowed to a crawl. At the moment I'm working on the scene where David Guardia comes out of his 10-day coma. At the time I wrote that scene in May 2023 I had never stayed overnight in a hospital. October 2024 I had my first-ever overnight (and longer) stay in a hospital as an adult. Where I can, I'll incorporate my experience into this particular scene.
Friday, 2025-February-21
📓 Given where Felix Legion is at the moment, in southwestern Virginia and one day out from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I am at a point where I can shift focus to other aspects of GHAWG more often. Chief among these is porting Rat Bike
to long form posts and to novel format. Once The Kids are brought to UNC, the final segment of David Guardia's Epic Ride remains: getting everyone else to Iowa where they have-- or, in David's case, will have-- their homes.
Although there are 2 more zapfic serials in the pipeline, Blue Lion
and The Bronze
, it occurred to me that because of how Rat Bike
evolved I have content for 6 short novels. I'll need a way to track all this new activity.
The spreadsheet I use for GHAWG activity had worked well for me for nearly 2 years. Now that I have new needs, I'll need to update this spreadsheet accordingly. I'll also need to add new features to it to reflect the way I'm working now compared to how I was working even a year ago.
Saturday, 2025-February-22
📓 Today I wanted to prepare the Weekly Summary post for publishing later in the day. Since I was offline for a week, and hadn't published the previous post, this post covers the last 3 weeks of zapfiic entries with the offline week bookended by weeks with zapfic entries.
Writing the commentary for these posts didn't take that long, and the spreadsheet I use to generate the Markdown for each day's entry worked as intended. However, due to how the Ecency front-end renders hyperlinks for Hive-based content, I needed to change how I handled these links. To present a clean content page, I decided to use a Markdown feature not many Hivers use: footnotes. Once I figured out how to create footnotes using Markdown, I was cranking out footnote after footnote. (Maybe I can explain in a future post how Markdown footnotes can be used?)
Because these footnotes were going to contain the hyperlinks I notmally include for SEO purposes, I needed to make sure they were handled appropriately. The InLeo front-end handles Markdown hyperlinks as intended, so that was no surprise.
The trick was finding a format I could use with the Ecency front-end which made these hyperlinks easy for the eye to handle. The innovation was to show a small preview of the content at the URL. Not including external links (which are handled normally), I had 50 footnotes, which means I had 50 links to Hive ecosystem content. I needed to employ redundancy because while it may look repeated in one front-end, for Ecency I needed to "simulate" the link text (the text inside the square brackets used for Markdown, or the opening and closing tags of the HTML anchor element (<a href="url">link-text</a>
).
Due to trial and error not just with footnotes but with the content I keep handy in a text file which stores frequently used links, it took me longer than I had expected to get the Weekly Summary post published. Essentially I redid the format or template I use for the Weekly Summary post. Along the way I fixed a bug which centered all content rather than just what needed centering. Better later than never, I published the radically redesigned Weekly Summary Post.
Sunday, 2025-February-23
📓 Today was a continuation of yesterday. This time I focused on the text file I use to store links and relevant Markdown needed to render them. Now I'm not just dealing with links; I'm including links inside footnotes, and the footnotes need to be rendered properly. I noticed a few errors which escaped me yesterday when I published the bigger than usual Weekly Summary post, so I edited the published post and corrected those errors. I'll need to do the same thing with the next post for The GHAWG Diaries series: shift Hive ecosystem links to footnotes.
Monday, 2025-February-24
📓 Because of my need to embed Hive ecosystem URLs inside footnotes for SEO purposes due to how the Ecency front-end renders them, I've been working on my spreadsheet to extract data I copied from the text file where I stored the Markdown codes for those footnotes. Once all that data has been processed, then I can do data entry directly in the spreadsheet.
The relevant area of the spreadsheet will contain not only the data for footnotes but also data tying it to other areas of my spreadsheet file. These include datetimes when the relevant terms were first mentioned or referred to. Also included are the URL stubs for those mentions or references.
Tuesday, 2025-February-25
📓 Today was a data entry day. Actually, not actual data entry, but rather data extraction since I was trying to populate fields by using spreadsheet formulas to extract relevant data. Since I'm using 4 pieces to build the 2-part Markdown footnote code, I will need at least 4 formulas:
- 1st formula extracts the text which would have been the hyperlink label; that formula is simple.
- 2nd formula builds the footnote indicator we see in paragraphs; that formula looks complicated, but it's actually easy.
- 3rd formula is the footnote number we see at the bottom of the content area; that's the easiest formula.
- 4th formula extracts the body of the actual footnote. This formula is the most complex, although it is simply extracts all data after the final character from the 3rd formula.
Where it gets crazy is extracting the URL stub assocciated with the zapfic entry where the term first appears or is referred to. The URL for that zapfic entry appears at the end of the data line in Markdown format. Note that the URL is surrounded by "(" and ")" characters. Not only does the URL stub need to be extracted from the URL; the final ")" character needs to be accounted for (or removed). The formula for extracting that URL stub is so crazy it deserves it's own long form post (with relevant graphics and diagrams).
I made sure to publish the day's zapfic entry, but the rest of my GHAWG activity revolved around my spreadsheet.
Wednesday, 2025-February-26
📓 More spreadsheet work.
The zapfic queue goes through 2025-April-29 (D29), so I'm not worried about falling behind on zapfic entries at this time. By the time that zapfic entry is published to blockchain via LeoThreads, Felix Legion will leave Chapel Hill, North Carolina, US and UNC less The Kids (Sanjay Rampersad and Lionel Odunsi). The Kids will have been dropped off at UNC, so Felix Legion will be reduced to 5 people: the 4 native Iowans (Rhonda Bella Guardia, the ►Brothers Marchenko◄[42], and Lindsay Etxeberria) plus the transplant from New Jersey (David Guardia), who also happens to be Rhonda's husband. Depending on how the zapfic entries are made for this final segment of David's Epic Ride, I may call these 5 members of Felix Legion the Felix Five or Felix 5.
Thursday, 2025-February-27
📓 With the set piece taking place in the fictional town of ►Bolivion, Virginia◄[43] now in motion, I've been thinking about how this scene would translate to a novel format. There's a good chance I rewite this scene for novel format for the purpose of making it make more sense in terms of how events unfold. My description of events as they unfold is obviously very broad, with room for corrective improvement. Although the point of this scene is to make a point about Felix Legion and each of its members, I know I can polish this scene to be better than what I had presented in zapfic format. I wrote it as I had in zapfic format because it the the most sensible story I could come up with for publishing to Hive blockchain. It also includes a detail whicch I can use later in either Blue Lion
or The Bronze
or both.
Friday, 2025-February-28
📓 I was experimenting with spreadsheet formulas I could use for advanced text processing. In the end, I cheated and simplified matters by modifying the data set I was using. While the data set contains more than 100 records representing commonly used links I use in my GHAWG posts, that's considered a small data set. That afforded me the luxury of modifying the data set in order to make a simplified formula. Many real-life situations will feature enormous data sets, some of which can't be modified; for those situations, finding a spreadsheet formula which handles all relevant cases of data is required.
Saturday, 2025-March-01
[44], I came up with a scene I can use in the sequel series Blue Lion
. It takes place after David Guardia, by that time known more by his Felix Legion name Templar
, begins his prison sentence in California by spending 30 days in The Hole (solitary confinement). While repeatedly punching a wall with bare knuckles, he has enters an altered state where he finds himself in communication with The Lord. In that communication, The Lord shares with Templar The Wisdom of The Lion, slightly rephrased.📓 Thanks to a meme posted by @jimmy.adames in which he shared ►The Wisdom of The Lion◄
At least in the early part of his prison sentence, Templar makes repeated trips to The Hole since that is where he is able to communicate with The Lord. In his first trip, he is reminded of the reason wife Rhonda entered his life as she had. In his second trip, he finds himself in communication with members of his family. The third and final trip to The Hole-- voluntary, and at his request-- features The Wisdom of The Lion since it foreshadows his role in the final zapfic serial The Bronze
.
Sunday, 2025-March-02
📓 Today was a spreadsheet day. I redid the advanced text processing formulas I use to build Markdown code for various sections of the Weekly Summaries. I still get tripped up by the ADDRESS() function because sometimes I need just the resulting address (for example, U2 or $C4), but sometimes I need what the address points to (a datetime, or the stub part of a URL). Along the way I tried to be clever with a formula or two, and it cost me a few hours; so I went back to a simpler form of the formula I wanted. With these formula updates active throughout the spreadsheet, I can resume working on getting both Weekly Summary post and The GHAWG Diaries Part 63 posted.
