In past year, I had to interview many people. In the process I came up with some useful tips.
- plenty interview techniques test skills that are at best irrelevant to real working life
- you want somebody who knows enough to do the job right now
- or somebody smart and motivated enough that they can learn the job quickly
- Determine the difference between "enjoy hanging out with" and "enjoy working with"
- Don't create a combative interrogation, do an interview in a collaborative conversation
- you are looking for somebody who you will enjoy working with
- you are looking for people who are keeping on getting better at what they do
- if you have the slight feeling of interviewing an asshole, don't hire them, no matter how good they are
- if there is less diversity in your team, your team is worse than it needed to be
- live with hiring people takes a really long time and is really, really hard

Number 8 is my favourite rule. The All Blacks used to have a similar rule - no dickheads.
It is difficult hiring people. I think one thing I look for is that the interview should be two way. Are they asking and doing their own due diligence on the role? They should be making sure it is right for them and I always feel attracted to those who ask meaningful questions with hunger in their eyes.
