A long term focus is only sensible in a world with little to no theft.
Where pillage is the norm, storing wealth long term is dangerous and (ironically) short sighted; one of many reasons I eagerly anticipate the collapse of the nation state.

This is true, which is why tribes worked. They couldn't store much, but they had trust in each other.
With the collapse of state, I think the trust needed will take a long time to form.
