Is providing small rewards truly a good way to give back to the community, or are we just fostering opportunism? While rewarding members can be an interesting idea, it should be done intelligently to avoid creating a type of member who is solely in it for the gains. One thing I believe works exceptionally well is badges, roles, and other means of distinguishing the most engaged members. People love having some form of status to showcase their involvement.

There would always be people with the mindset of only "taking" and not giving back to the community by actively participating in the growth of that community. Roles and badges would indeed help to provide recognition to promising members.
You are right on point with this. There's a lot of intelligence needed when and after creating a community. And I love the approach you took on badges, roles, and other means to give a role to the engaged members.
