Jobs are meant to make us more money in life but careers are meant for fulfilling purpose.
It is often easy for kids to scream out their career choices when asked about what they would want to become/pursue in life. I want to be a doctor, which comes out as easy as some of the other professional careers that fascinate our young minds. I once heard a teenager say that she wants to be a nurse because of the nurses uniforms and caps. How funny to say, but such is the case with many of us; we get fascinated by the uniforms or trainings, job descriptions, and others.
I wasn't exempted from those willing to study these courses, but for what purpose do we choose these career paths? I wished to be a medical doctor because of the respect attached to the profession. My brother dreamt about politics because of the power and authority politicians possess. But that soon faded away as adulthood soon set in with better understanding. This was when we realized that important purposes must be attached to our career choices, and these key reasons should be the key driving force and motivation attracting us to our career choices.
The purpose attached to a career choice is as good as the career itself and equally validates such a choice. This understanding came after we had outgrown the childlike feelings of getting fascinated by some careers, probably because of those genuine reasons.
I was beginning to find some sense of purpose and fulfillment in some activities. I couldn't be a doctor anymore even though my respect for them never declined as lifesavers; I equally found out that I would be making more impact in other fields than being a doctor. There are a lot of hungry people I could assist if I chose to be a farmer instead.
There are more hungry people out here; hunger and starvation is the current plague ravaging almost every part of the country. We have fewer farmers compared to the number of mouths waiting to be fed. The limited supply of food continuously impacts food prices. Some sickness can be averted if only people had more nutrient-rich meals to eat. More so, eating natural food is one good way to keep away the doctor. We have fewer cases of sick people compared to the number of people who go hungry by the day.
If only I could have more land space, seeds, tractors, and good weather, I would do well to feed more mouths. It is one of the most stressful career choices, but the pleasure of knowing that someone didn't go to bed hungry on my account is satisfying.
With the little food we have been able to grow yearly, I am pleased by the number of neighbors we are able to reach out to with our substance; this gives me joy.
Another thing I am glad to have paid attention to now is that I have learned a bit of garment construction that has now been really useful and clothing for a lot of people ever since.
Most career choices that people admire and choose are based on how profitable those endeavors can be; a banker, businessman, or politician would be impressed by the size of their pockets and see this as a measure of growth, and the more money they have alongside its influences would convince them to believe this as positive growth. Reaching the peak of their career would be when they have obtained a certain financial level in life, but other career choices, just like farming, may not be really profitable unless we pay keen attention and treat them as business ventures.
Some intelligent and understanding minds also make use of their careers to impact lives and bless others rather than working just to fulfill their pleasure and make more money. It was with so much joy I once met a retired medical professional who established a charity hospital to give free medical checkups for people of his community. Hence, it is important to be mindful of the purpose attached to our career choice before taking up the willingness to tread such paths.
