My question is: Do they have the legal backing to undergo such a project? This has to do with the biometric information of billions of people. Why is there no push back for this amongst governments across the globe? Any way, I don't think I will be using this protocol any time soon.

That's the thing. There is no stipulation as to how those machines were approved to be installed in those countries or cities. Apart from these, the security concerns as well as to how they are going to use or store those data collected by the Orb.
Like you, I'm adamant to register let alone have my iris scanned.
