Affiliate marketing has been around for a long time, way before BTC was even launched.
The concept is simple, the product owner gives the affiliate marketer a commission from any sales the affiliate makes. This either comes as a one off payment or as a percentage commission on all sales/actions your referral makes in the future.
This benefits the product owner as the affiliate is doing the marketing for them, the product owner only has to pay commission on a confirmed sale so can factor this into the price of the product and it is a constant. If the product owner was doing their own marketing, then the amount of sales is not guaranteed and it is much harder to factor in the exact costs to the product.
This benefits the affiliate as they get paid for every sale they make but they do not have to create, store or ship the product. The only cost to the affiliate is the cost of marketing, whether this is in time or currency.
This has no impact on the consumer as the price of the product is not affected, the marketing costs of any product you purchase are already included, whether the company chooses to market themselves or through affiliates there is always a marketing cost involved.

I have been wondering about affiliate marketing on Hive, but as I've seen very little of it, I wasn't sure if it's frowned upon or not.
