Homeless By Choice: How To Save $800/Month In Your Sleep

in LeoFinance3 years ago

Hello.

My name is @otherbrandt and I live in the woods.

I started this adventure about two months ago as a financial experiment of sorts.

Up until then I'd been living in Denver, shelling out $800 a month for the cheapest studio apartment you could find in the sketchiest part of town you could find.

I'll never forget the weekend I moved in, because someone got killed in an alley a block away, and I was there to hear the gunshots and the screaming.

And I'll never forget the night before the day I finally moved out, either, because I was awakened by sirens and flashing lights around 2am, and when I dragged myself up off my leaky-ass air mattress and staggered like what a gif of half-drunk sadness would look like to the window to investigate, I saw a couple dozen cops setting up a crime scene around the discount store next door and a couple paramedics wheeling a body out on a stretcher.

Now, I'm not saying it was all that bad of a neighborhood. It had plenty of perks. For instance:

  • there were liquor stores conveniently located within three blocks of me in all four cardinal directions
  • pretty much any drug imaginable could be had within about half an hour simply by walking around and making eye contact with random strangers
  • the local strip club was so local I could stand in my parking lot and land an empty beer bottle in theirs

But despite all it had going for it, that place couldn't offer me the one thing I really wanted:

Mountains.

Denver likes to present itself as a mountain town, which is about as realistic as the police presenting themselves as officers of peace.

Denver has no mountains. It is built on the plains, next to the mountains. Close to what I wanted, but not quite there.

So, tired of flushing $800 down the toilet every month, tired of feeling trapped in a rental contract, and tired of sharing walls with noisy neighbors, I finally said fuck it and I left Denver and I drove west.

My life is a lot smaller, simpler, and more affordable now.

Just me, the mountains, my great little car, and plenty of public lands where I can freely pitch my tent.

Behold:

That's what happiness looks like, to me at least.

It's an adventure worth writing about, so I guess that's what I'll be doing.

I hope you find my stories interesting. I think they'll have enough to do with money-related stuff to post on LeoFinance, but if anyone disagrees please let me know.

More to come…

Blimey. Denver seems to have gone downhill since I was last there a couple of decades ago.

I'm looking forward to hearing more about your adventures.

Yeah, Denver is kind of overpopulated and overpriced now. Traffic is nuts too. I'd highly recommend not moving there :)

Great Camp

Very interesting. I have scrolled back to the start of this long strange camping trip adventure experiment you are on. And will be going to hell in a bucket, but at least I am enjoying the ride. Sorry got Gratefully Dead side tracked there.

Now I am off to visit a few campsites with you... Music please.
